Operations Engineer
The Operations Engineer will play a critical role in the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the LM26 machine and facility, supporting experimental campaigns in a fast-paced, high-risk R&D environment. This role requires strong hands-on engineering judgment, cross-disciplinary collaboration, and the ability to diagnose and resolve complex system issues under evolving conditions.
Responsibilities (ensure these are listed in order of importance – most to least important):
- Own day-to-day operational readiness of the LM26 system, including pre-run checks, system configuration, and post-run assessment.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of reliability, availability, and maintainability of complex systems.
- Help optimize full system operation across mechanical, control and electrical systems and assist in operation and troubleshooting of machine.
- Lead or support root-cause analysis and corrective actions following system faults, failures, or abnormal events.
- Develop and maintain operational procedures, checklists, and work instructions for machine operation and maintenance.
- Collaborate closely with mechanical, electrical, controls, and physics teams to integrate system changes safely and effectively.
- Ensure changes to systems or procedures follow appropriate review, safety, and approval processes.
- Maintain personal and co-worker safety as top priority in all operations.
- Other tasks as assigned.
Requirements:
- B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Physics or equivalent
- Minimum 3 years of demonstrated experience in a hands-on operations role using and maintaining complex industrial or lab equipment. Experience with high vacuum systems is beneficial.
- Experience working in prototype, experimental, or R&D environments where systems are constantly evolving.
- Strong hands-on experience in the safe development, implementation and operation of electromechanical systems in a fast-paced prototype/research and development environment.
- Ability to work effectively under ambiguity and changing priorities
- Strong interpersonal skills and proven ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team
- Excellent time management skills.
- Experience in industrial safety practices
- Experience in quality management systems and processes
- Able to work flexible hours including some evening and/or weekend shifts
This role requires self-directed work that often is driven by employee initiative. The successful candidate will have the expertise to focus their attention on the highest priority initiatives that support the Company goals.
The typical hiring range for this position is $100,000 - $125,000. General Fusion considers many factors when determining total compensation, including job-specific or highly specialized knowledge, skills and experience, proficiency, job location and internal equity.
We welcome applicants with relevant mechanical or engineering experience. Candidates who hold P.Eng or EIT credentials will be hired under the Mechanical Engineer title. Those without these credentials will be assigned an equivalent title that matches the scope of their position.
