As an intern, you'll gain exposure to multiple engineering disciplines, build practical skills, and contribute directly to high-impact projects. You'll see firsthand how collaboration drives success across departments and with our Navy partners, both on the cutting-edge COLUMBIA Class design and with ongoing improvements to the VIRGINIA Class submarines.

The mission of the Radiological Controls directorate is to be the Shipyard's conscience with respect to protecting our customers based on the basic principles when it comes to Radiological Controls. They ensure all organizations are doing their best to maintain best work practices while performing nuclear construction and repair.  Their regulatory role is evaluated annually and is conditional to NAVSEA extending us the privilege of a license to handle radioactive materials.

Radiological Engineering (RE) is responsible for maintaining and interpreting Radiological Control requirements in order to ensure that appropriate Radiological Controls are incorporated into nuclear work. RE is comprised of the following groups:

  • Nuclear Regional Maintenance Department (NRMD) RE Group
  • RADIACs and New Construction Group
  • Radiological Waste, Mixed Waste and Shipping Group
  • Special Projects Group.

During your internship, you may be responsible for any of the following tasks:

  • Review and validate changes to Ship System Status Report (SSSR).
  • Review processes and identify opportunities for innovation.
  • Review technical direction for radiological work for compliance to requirements.
  • Review radiological deficiencies to determine how to prevent recurrence.
  • Participate in the Radiological Emergency Response Organization (RERO).

Program Highlights

  • Duration: A minimum of 8 weeks during Summer 2026.
  • Location: The position is on-site and you may be placed in any of the following Groton, CT locations: Groton Shipyard or Naval Submarine Base New London
  • Relocation Assistance: This internship is not eligible for a housing stipend or relocation assistance.

Qualifications

  • Education Requirements:
    • Enrolled full-time at a College or University
    • Completed at least Freshman year by Summer 2026
    • Pursuing a B.S. or M.S. Degree in any Engineering discipline
  • Availability Requirements:
    • Willing and able to work 40 hours per week for at least 8 consecutive weeks between May 2026 to September 2026
