Naval Architecture and Structural Design and Engineering – Summer Internship

The Naval Architecture and Structural Design Directorate is responsible for the engineering and design of the hull and internal/external structures for the VIRGINIA Class submarine, as well as the weights, hydrodynamics and hydrostatics for all classes of submarines.

Working in a design/build team environment, the Naval Architecture and Structural Design engineers take part in concept development, preliminary design, detail design, construction support, overhaul and repair of submarine hull, external and internal structures. With their unique expertise, team members solve complex structural-mechanical problems using state-of-the-art computational simulations, material sciences and structural dynamics. The Naval Architecture Directorate is also responsible for Naval Architecture including weights, hydrodynamics and hydrostatics.

Naval Architecture and Structural Engineering Summer Interns may be responsible for the following tasks:

  • Perform calculations supporting submarine structures
  • Assist in the design development process through concept development, preliminary design, detail design, construction support, overhaul and repair of submarine structures
  • Support development of 3D product models or 2D drawings that disclose the details for fabrication of submarine structures.
  • Perform static and dynamic finite element structural analysis to support design of submarine structures and associated components using advanced analytical techniques
  • Perform analyses relating to the movement of the submarine through the water and flow over appendages; predict speed and power, hydrodynamic forces on appendages and maneuvering performance
  • Predict and manage the hydrostatic balance of submarines through control of the ballast systems
  • Analyze stability, submerged equilibrium, surfaced hydrostatics, tank capacity and facility constraints
  • Develop barge loading, ballasting and cargo securing plans supporting at-sea transit of submarine modules and components to support construction

Please note: Due to the high volume of applications received, our current process does not involve interviews. Rest assured that even though you will not be contacted for an interview, your time and effort are greatly appreciated. Each application is diligently reviewed for consideration. Thank you for your understanding and interest!
