Hull/Structure Engineer

The Life Cycle Engineering Department supports the design, construction and test of in-service Navy DDG 51 and DDG 1000 surface combatants in multiple locations around the world. Our Functional Engineering group is seeking an experienced Hull/Structure Engineer to join our team. This role supports structural analysis of design modifications for ship alterations, assists Navy counterparts with evaluation of hull structure and foundation changes required for modernization of the DDG 51 and 1000 classes. Operating under the BIW Business Operating System (BOS), the Hull/Structure Senior Engineer ensures compliance with safety, quality, and performance standards while coordinating with other key stakeholders to meet overall milestones.

Key Responsibilities

Safety Leadership:

  • Champion and enforce BIW safety policies and procedures, including "Design for Safety".
  • Promote a culture of proactive safety awareness and accountability across the team.
  • Ensure safe workplace conditions and compliance with government and company safety standards.

Project Execution:

  • Provide technical and project leadership to design for structural modifications.
  • Conduct structural load analyses.
  • Specify new functional designs, and design changes, in support of Navy contracts, Ship Upgrades (SCDs), and special studies.
  • Develop and maintain associated calculations and configuration management of changes to structural baselines since new construction.

Team Collaboration and Communication:

  • Work with customers (Navy, Fabrication and Installing Activities, Procurement, Contracts, Detail Design, and On-Site Design Representatives) to resolve technical issues, recommend changes and maintain appropriate communication.
  • Develop, document, and present technical positions on requirements compliance issues related to design, integration and construction.
  • Review and approve design products.

Required/Preferred Education/Training

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Naval Architecture or a related degree required.
  • Secret security clearance or the ability to get one.

Required/Preferred Experience

  • Knowledge of DDG 51 and DDG 1000 Class Ship Specifications required.
  • Knowledge of the General Specifications for Overhaul preferred.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to organize, plan, and execute projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment.
  • Highly motivated, strong attention to detail with ability to work independently.
  • WINDOWS, WINDOWS software, and MS Office products operating skills are required.
  • Experience with Microsoft Excel is required and experience with MathCAD is preferred.
  • AutoCAD and CATIA model reviewing skills are preferred.
  • Proficient in FEA with FEMAP/Nastran.
  • At least 10 or more years of experience with structural analysis for Navy Ships.
  • Ability to solve and explain complex technical issues.
  • Demonstrated ability to work multiple priorities simultaneously, and to completion.
  • Familiar with 0450-KS-0000-01 (especially weld sizing and configurations).
  • Familiar with NAVSEA 0908-LP-000-3010 and MIL-STD-1689.
  • Must have ability to obtain a secret clearance. This position requires you to be able to obtain a government security clearance. You must be a US Citizen for consideration and you must be able to obtain an interim security clearance within the first 45 days of hire.
