Engineering Manager
At GEICO, we offer a rewarding career where your ambitions are met with endless possibilities. Every day we honor our iconic brand by offering quality coverage to millions of customers and being there when they need us most. We thrive through relentless innovation to exceed our customers' expectations while making a real impact for our company through our shared purpose. When you join our company, we want you to feel valued, supported and proud to work here. That's why we offer The GEICO Pledge: Great Company, Great Culture, Great Rewards and Great Careers.
Position Summary: We are seeking an experienced engineering manager for our growing team with domain expertise in cloud-native architecture and deep networking fundamentals. GEICO's Hybrid Cloud Fabric team is our transformation vanguard, dedicated to securing and connecting GEICO's public and private cloud infrastructure in a cloud-native zero trust model. We leverage service mesh, container networking technologies like Cilium, eBPF, and SPIFFE/SPIRE.
Why this role matters: Strong cryptographic workload identity using SPIRE/SPIFFE, together with Istio/Envoy, is the keystone of our zero-trust future. You will enable our workloads to cross provider and regional boundaries with ease and grace.
Who you are:
- You understand leadership to be an active verb, a living, participatory practice, not a title.
- You recognize uncertainty as an invitation to participate and influence outcomes.
- You push the boundaries of what's possible with cutting-edge technologies.
- You mentor and guide other engineers, fostering a culture of learning and collaboration.
- You occasionally write code and submit PRs because it was your first love.
- You know how to use kubectl, the difference between a deployment and a pod, and the relationship between a Service and an Endpoint/EndpointSlice.
- You support the open-source community and enjoy sharing your expertise.
What You'll Do:
- Understand our vision; make it so, in the way and style that is uniquely you.
- Manage, mentor, and expand a team of Staff, Senior and Junior engineers, helping them develop their competencies in networking and cloud-native architecture.
- Act as a force multiplier, leading the team by "chopping wood and carrying water", handling administrative and managerial duties so that our technical leadership is enabled to execute quickly.
- Provide code reviews and tactical technical guidance for Junior, Sr and Staff engineers.
- Lead with humility and eagerness to learn from our technical leadership – our tech stack is complex and familiarity with every facet is not required.
- Set goals for the team and individual team members, holding them accountable for delivery and coaching them on incremental progress towards long-term goals.
- Build strong relationships with stakeholders across GEICO, including partner teams such as Platform Engineering, Network Engineering, and Security, and customer teams across the rest of GEICO tech.
Minimum Qualifications:
- 5+ years of engineering management experience in the networking or security domains.
- 5+ years as an individual contributor in the networking or security domains.
- Competency in Go, C++ or Rust programming.
- Experience with the OSI networking model, TCP/IP networking, and categorical knowledge of Layer 4 – Layer 7 networking.
- Familiarity with Kubernetes internals; experience running and operating software on Kubernetes.
- Great communication, interpersonal, and conflict resolution skills.
- Strong attention to detail and excellent analytical capabilities.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Hands-on experience with Istio, Envoy, Cilium, and SPIRE/SPIFFE, or have previously rolled out zero-trust networking or service mesh in an enterprise environment.
- Deep exposure to zero-trust patterns, workload identity, and compliance in regulated environments.
- Experience leading multiple teams; owning cross-org programs.
- Demonstrated success in platform product thinking (clear interfaces, paved-road adoption).
- Experience using, contributing to, and helping others contribute to open-source technology.
- Experience designing and operating large-scale traffic systems.
The above annual salary range is a general guideline. Multiple factors are taken into consideration to arrive at the final hourly rate/annual salary to be offered to the selected candidate. Factors include, but are not limited to, the scope and responsibilities of the role, the selected candidate's work experience, education and training, the work location as well as market and business considerations.
