The Data Engineer will be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining robust data pipelines and ETL solutions using Ab Initio. The role includes enabling scalable data integration, ensuring high-quality data delivery, and supporting analytical and business applications across the enterprise. The engineer will work closely with Data Architects, Analysts, and cross-functional teams to ensure efficient data flow and availability.
Key Responsibilities
1. Data Pipeline & ETL Development
- Design, develop, test, and deploy Ab Initio-based ETL solutions to acquire, transform, and load data across systems.
- Build scalable and performant graphical, continuous, and batch processes.
- Implement reusable components, frameworks, and accelerators.
2. Data Integration & Processing
- Integrate data from multiple source systems (databases, files, APIs, streaming platforms).
- Optimize data processing performance using Ab Initio GDE, Conduct>IT, Co>Op, and Express>IT.
- Apply data modelling and transformation techniques aligned to architectural standards.
3. Data Quality & Governance
- Implement data validation rules, error handling, and reconciliation processes.
- Ensure adherence to data governance, lineage, and compliance standards (e.g., POPIA).
- Work with data stewards to enhance data quality and define metadata.
4. Production Support
- Troubleshoot and resolve data pipeline issues in production environments.
- Monitor workflows, logs, and system performance.
- Support data operations, batch scheduling, and SLAs.
5. Collaboration & Delivery
- Engage with business and technical stakeholders to understand data requirements.
- Contribute to solution design sessions and architecture forums.
- Participate in Agile ceremonies (stand-ups, grooming, sprint reviews).
Required Skills & Experience
Technical Skills
- 5+ years' experience as a Data Engineer or ETL Developer.
- Strong hands-on experience with Ab Initio components, including:
- Graphical Development Environment (GDE)
- Conduct>IT and Control Center
- Co>Op System
- Continuous flows / real-time processing
- Strong SQL skills (Teradata, PostgreSQL).
- Exposure to both data warehousing methodologies:
- Inmon (Corporate Information Factory)
- Kimball (Dimensional Modelling / Star & Snowflake schemas)
- Understanding of data warehousing, data modelling, and ETL best practices.
