In this position...

Contribute to a team highly engaged in all aspects of battery materials research from material synthesis, characterization, fabrication of coin and pouch cells, and testing for electrochemical performance. Contribute knowledge of battery electrolytes to design of battery cells and cell formation processes, and to analysis of cycling and aging processes. Apply advanced characterization to battery materials, particularly electrolyte.

Responsibilities

What you'll do...

5 days on site in the laboratory delivering new electrolyte blends to the team.

Develop custom electrolyte blends for varying cell chemistries that improve cell performance, including capacity and durability.

Work with electrolyte suppliers to develop new additives and blends for new chemistries and technical requirements.

Understand what each electrolyte ingredient is contributing to cell performance and durability.

Strongly motivated to work collaboratively with a diverse team of engineers, chemists, materials scientists, physicists, and technicians.

Learn existing and develop new lab processes and equipment.

Deliver results in the form of presentations, papers, and inventions.

Qualifications

You'll have...

Bachelors/Masters in materials science, materials engineering, chemical engineering, chemistry, or related fields.

3 years of experience in Li-ion batteries with experimental skills in processing active material, performing cell testing and advanced material characterization methods. (Thesis and/or Dissertation allowed)

Battery liquid electrolyte experience should include blending custom formulations including high voltage cathode applications.

Liquid electrolyte analysis including NMR, GC, LC, IC, MS, FTIR, and other techniques as applicable.

Fundamental understanding of chemical processes and mechanisms within batteries from formation to end of life.

Even better, you may have...

PhD in battery materials science, engineering, chemistry or related fields

Experience with testing and characterizing Na-ion batteries is a plus.

A wide range of material analysis experience is also desirable. This may include teardown and post-mortem analysis of materials from pouch, cylindrical, and/or prismatic cells using porosimetry, ICP, XRD, SEM, TEM etc.

A track record of written and/or oral presentations of research findings to specialist or non-specialist audiences

You may not check every box, or your experience may look a little different from what we've outlined, but if you think you can bring value to Ford Motor Company, we encourage you to apply!
