The work you will do:

Drainage Engineer I / District Design

This position will perform engineering work involving the design and permitting of drainage facilities for various types of highway and bridge projects.

Your specific responsibilities:

Performs engineering work involving the design and permitting of drainage facilities for various types of highway and bridge projects. Performs plans review for all phases of design, including drainage plans, shop drawings, and permit packages to ensure that they are following all Florida Department of Transportation (Department) standards and guidelines for the projects including the review of any related drainage, hydrologic, and environmental reports, and studies.

Designs primary and secondary drainage and stormwater management systems related to highway projects. Prepares calculations used to design the drainage and stormwater management systems utilizing computer programs, such as Advanced Interconnected Pond Routing (ADICPR), Hydraulic Engineering Center's River Analysis System (HEC-RAS), CULVERT Master, and GOEPAK Drainage. Performs field reviews on projects to determine drainage areas and flow patterns and to establish high-water controls. Prepares drainage maps and other drainage related drawings using Computer Aided Drafting Design (CADD) software, including Microstation, Decartes and GEOPAK. Determines the adequacy of drainage structures in accordance with hydraulic and safety standards. Signs and seals drainage documents.

Assists the District Environmental Permit Coordinator in environmental permitting activities related to plans production, including coordination with permitting agencies, determination of required permits, wetland impacts, required mitigation, budgeting for mitigation, and coordination with in-house project managers.

Prepares Bridge Hydraulics reports and Bridge Hydraulics recommendation sheets. Performs hydraulic studies and prepares hydraulic reports such as Location Hydraulic reports and Pond Siting reports for Project Development Studies and Design.

Provides drainage and permitting related technical support to other Department offices and design teams. Assists Department project managers with consultant selections, scope preparations, man hour negotiations, schedules, cost estimates, and related items.

Coordinates drainage design with other agencies such as counties, cities, or Water Management districts. Provides expert witness testimony for eminent domain cases.

The successful candidate will have the following required knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Knowledge of stormwater management system design.
  • Department criteria for use in review and design of stormwater systems.
  • Bridge hydraulics and scour determinations.
  • Permitting criteria.
  • Computer-aided drafting design software such as Microstation and Geopak design.

Skills in:

  • Preparing stormwater calculations and reports.
  • Using a personal computer.
  • Using Microsoft Office and stormwater software such as ADICPR, HEC-RAS, PONDS, Culvert Master, and Flow Master.
  • Verbal and written communication.

Ability to:

  • Perform field reviews.
  • Analyze stormwater problems and make timely and practical decisions.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Perform as a team member.
  • Exercise good judgment and take prudent risks.
  • Plan and organize work effectively.
  • Work on multiple projects or assignments and meet established deadlines.

Licensure/Registration/Certification requirements:

  • Registration as a Professional Engineer, in accordance with Chapter 471., F.S.

Minimum qualifications:

  • Registration as a Professional Engineer in accordance with Florida Statute 471.
