Student Academic Success Services Coordinator

The primary purpose of the Student Academic Success Services (SASS) Coordinator is to assist in the design, development, and implementation of departmental processes and/or programs. Recommends policies and procedures to ensure effective coordination of departmental programs. This position provides academic support to students, manages student issues as they arise, hires and supervises student employees, and interacts professionally with university personnel, including faculty, chairs, and deans. SASS academic support programs are an integral part of Academic Affairs and contribute directly to the University's graduation and retention rates.

Job Function: The coordinator also contributes to the development, delivery, and assessment of student academic service retention efforts including Supplemental Instruction (SI), tutoring, and Peer-Assisted Student Success (PASS) programs.

  • Recruits, interviews, hires, and trains up to 120 student employees, which include SI leaders, tutors, and PASS leaders for assigned disciplines.
  • Supervises, observes, and meets regularly with SI leaders, tutors, and PASS leaders.
  • Makes decisions about appropriate assignment of student employees to specific support roles in Student Academic Success Service (SASS).
  • Conducts professional development sessions, workshops, and training for student leaders based on CRLA accreditation.
  • Recommends improvements to university administration to enhance the effectiveness of academic support programs.
  • Ensures programs are aligned with certification standards set forth by the College Reading and Learning Association.
  • Collaborates with team to collect, analyze, and evaluate data for reporting outcomes of SASS on course grades, retention, and degree progression.
  • Develops, updates, and maintains training materials, forms, policies, and procedures for SASS.
  • Builds and maintains academic support schedules for SI, PASS leaders, and tutors.
  • Evaluates academic needs and updates course schedule to reflect academic support.
  • Manages attendance reporting database and generates regular reports.
  • Creates student surveys for scheduling purposes and program assessment.
  • Presents to faculty and university staff about the SI program and alternative academic support services offered by SASS.
  • Supports expansion and promotion efforts for SI, tutoring, and PASS.

Marginal Functions:

  • Perform other duties as assigned by immediate supervisor.

Departmental Requirements:

Supervision Exercised: These positions have a high level of independent responsibility and decision-making when it comes to hiring, training, and supervising large numbers (of undergraduate student employees each semester (approx 100). Supervision Received: Supervised by the Director of the office who provides general direction and collaborates on retention programs and services.

Program Direction and Development: Student Academic Success Services maintains accreditation by College Reading and Learning Association for the learning centers. Coordinators use these standards to develop and implement student employee trainings, observations, and programs. Work collaboratively with university staff to ensure programs success. Coordinators will exercise independent judgment and discretion when implementing programs that are related to operations procedures for Student Academic Success Services.

Policy-making and/or Interpretation: May interpret departmental policies for area of responsibility. Coordinators have a high level of independent responsibility and decision-making to manage the operations of the department. The Coordinator assists in the development and implementation of activities and programs supporting Student Academic Success Services.
