Drilling Engineering Intern

We are seeking a driven Drilling Engineering Intern to join our drilling team for the summer, where you will support the design, execution, and optimization of geothermal drilling operations. As a Drilling Engineering Intern, you will take ownership of a defined project that delivers measurable improvements to drilling performance, while also gaining exposure to both office-based engineering and field operations. You will collaborate closely with Fervo's drilling engineers and operations teams to apply advanced techniques, analyze performance data, and contribute to the development of innovative solutions that expand the reach of clean, reliable geothermal energy. This internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience at the intersection of engineering, field operations, and renewable energy innovation.

Responsibilities

• Engineering Support: Assist with well design, planning, and drilling operations
• Project Ownership: Lead a defined project with clear deliverables to improve drilling performance and commercial outcomes
• Field Experience: Participate in site visits and gain hands-on exposure to drilling operations
• Technical Focus Areas (may include):
  • Cement optimization (e.g., reverse cementing, foam cementing, shale barriers, displacement efficiency, long-term integrity)
  • Drill pipe optimization (e.g., connection selection, hard-band alternatives, insulated DP evaluation)

Required Qualifications

• Current student in Petroleum, Mechanical, Chemical Engineering, or a related field
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
• Technical curiosity and eagerness to learn
• Willingness to travel to field sites

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior upstream oil & gas or drilling-related experience
• Familiarity with cementing, drilling equipment, or wellbore integrity concepts
• Demonstrated ability to deliver projects with measurable outcomes
• Preference for rising seniors; strong juniors considered

Location

Fervo Energy has offices in Houston, TX, Golden, CO, Reno, NV, Oakland, CA, and Salt Lake City, UT. This position will be eligible for some hybrid work flexibility, but regular in-office presence at our Houston Office will be required.
