Introduction to the Team

Our Technology Team partners with teams across Expedia Group to create innovative products, services, and tools to deliver high-quality experiences for travelers, partners, and our employees. A singular technology platform powered by data and machine learning provides secure, differentiated, and personalized experiences that drive loyalty and traveler satisfaction.

Within this organization, the EG Metrics Platform (EGMP) team in the Data Platform organization is on a mission to build Expedia Group's enterprise-wide semantic layer — a centralized metrics platform that standardizes how business metrics are defined, computed, governed, and consumed across the company. As the single source of truth for critical business metrics (bookings, revenue, visits, funnel progression, conversion, and more), we power executive reporting, experimentation, BI dashboards, and self-serve analytics at scale.

Semantic layers are increasingly vital in the age of LLMs and AI agents — they prevent hallucinations, enforce consistency, and enable trusted metric discovery — and our team is at the forefront of this shift, building an AI-powered semantic layer with agentic capabilities for natural-language metric exploration, intelligent anomaly detection, automated operations, and governed AI-ready data access.

In this role, you will:

  • Architect scalable, low-latency data pipelines across multi-petabyte workloads.
  • Write and optimize advanced SQL across multiple dialects (Spark SQL, Trino/Presto, StarRocks) for large-scale transformations, aggregations, and analytics.
  • Build and maintain analytics-ready data models — facts, dimensions, rollups, metric layers, and gold-layer datasets that power dashboards and executive reporting.
  • Design and build production-grade Agent skills and MCP tools for metric discovery, SQL generation, anomaly detection, and AI-assisted operations.
  • Create intelligent systems that detect anomalies, trigger alerts, and auto-remediate issues — including AI-driven monitoring, incident triage, and automated re-runs of failed jobs.
  • Partner closely with analysts, data scientists, and product managers to enable self-serve analytics, translating between deep technical details and clear business context.
  • Own end-to-end solution design from scratch — balancing performance, cost, scalability, and reliability while mentoring peers and contributing to a culture of strong ownership.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • You have 8+ years of data engineering experience building platforms and data solutions at enterprise scale.
  • You are highly proficient in SQL, including complex joins, window functions, performance tuning, and a deep understanding of dialect differences (e.g., Spark, Trino, StarRocks).
  • You have hands-on experience with big data platforms such as Apache Spark, Databricks, Trino/Presto, and orchestration tools like Airflow.
  • You are familiar with the modern data stack, including tools like dbt, Iceberg/Delta Lake, and lakehouse architectures.
  • You have strong system design skills for distributed data systems, including fault tolerance and cost/performance trade-offs.
  • You are experienced in data modeling (star/snowflake schemas, aggregate tables, semantic layers) optimized for BI and analytics.
  • You bring a strong ownership mindset, clear communication skills, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively across time zones.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • You have experience creating production-scale Agent skills or MCP tools; experience with agentic analytics is a strong plus.
  • You have worked with Metric Stores or Semantic Layer platforms.
  • You have experience in data governance, including metadata management, cataloging, data quality frameworks, lineage, and access control.
