Manager, Environmental Services
The Environmental Services Manager is responsible for the 24-hour, day-to-day operation of cleaning, waste collection and internal moves. Manages, coordinates and monitors the environmental services staff to provide efficient, uninterrupted delivery of services to all departments. Provides in-service training. Maintains the hospital's internal and external physical environment in a sanitary, orderly, and esthetically acceptable state for the benefit of patients, visitors, and employees, as well as developing, implementing and abiding by the policies and procedures that meet all applicable regulatory agencies and Joint Commission guidelines.
Essential Job Responsibilities
- The position is responsible for leading the department and accountable for Environmental Services
- This position has direct supervisory responsibilities such as hiring, coaching/mentoring, skills development, recognition and rewards, staff productivity, performance management and succession planning.
- Equitably and consistently apply and practice policies and procedures for all staff.
- Develop and manage department budget at or below budget expectations and consistent with adjusted volume variations.
- Identify and implement revenue enhancement opportunities.
- Assure completion of staff competencies including mandatory education and programs relative to job specific criteria.
- Equitably and consistently apply and practice policies and procedures for all staff.
- Establish and maintain a safe working environment; assure staff comply with safety, environmental, and infection control guidelines
- Assure proper use of safety equipment and devices; hold individuals accountable if non-compliant
- Improve HCAP scores according to fiscal year targets; demonstrate year after year improvement in service to internal and external customers.
- Respond to client service recovery issues within required time frame and to the satisfaction of the customer
- Hold regular department meetings, ensure off shifts and satellite offices receive timely and accurate information.
- Build and strengthen relations through the fostering of two-way communication to diffuse sources of conflict.
- Act on most urgent tasks; prioritize and delegate workable systems.
- Establish performance measures to equitably evaluate staff using objective and job-based criteria, coach towards compliance and address variances.
- Hold staff accountable for consistently modeling the behavioral standards
- Consider the financial impact of decisions; use financial concepts for decision making; monitor financial
- Identify, evaluate, and select internal and external talent, assuring an acceptable fit with Independence Health's desired culture; effectively match right person to right job.
- Develop staffing schedule for 24 hours/7-day week operation to ensure all areas have appropriate coverage
- Routinely order supplies based on previously established par levels and usage.
- Orient and train new employees.
- Maintains mandatory education to meet compliance of waste regulations; maintains regulatory files for the management of the waste streams
- Provides overall support to the Director for the daily and annual cleaning functions at the satellite facilities.
- Other duties as assigned.
Competency and Experience [Knowledge, Skills and Abilities]
Required Qualifications/Experience
- Associate's degree in related field and related training/experience within the last five (5) years.
- Two (2) to Four (4) years supervisory/management experience in Environmental Services
- Strong leadership ability, good organizational skills, independent and critical thinking skills, sound judgment, and knowledge of legal aspects and liability of functional area.
- Strong ability to communicate complex and/or controversial topics and concepts to a wide and diverse audience.
Preferred Qualifications/Experience
- Bachelor's degree in related field.
- Experience in Healthcare setting.
License, Certification & Clearances
- Act 34-PA Criminal Record Check from the PA State Police system.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
- Incumbent will be scheduled based on operational need (rotate shifts, standby, on-call, etc.).
- Travel may be expected locally between System locations.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- This position has direct supervisory responsibilities and serves as a coach and mentor for other positions in the department.
- Management responsibilities include hiring, coaching, skills development, recognition and rewards, staff productivity and performance management.
