Project Systems Engineer

The Project Systems Engineer will contribute to the project engineering activities in support of site-level controls and monitoring of our Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), and automation support for site-level energy storage system processes and operations.

Accountable For:

Designing and developing advanced monitoring and controls techniques and devices for site-level command and control applications integrating site power conversion devices, meters, ground fault detection, and other site equipment to provide robust energy storage and delivery for various customer use cases using our Z3 In-Line product.

Responsibilities:

  1. Support related project engineering activities during the engineering design, procurement, construction, and commissioning phases for a range of Battery Energy Storage projects, from; DC only BESS to full turnkey installations (Networking and Controls). This includes visiting project sites on from time to time, as needed.
  2. Experience in validating and troubleshooting various communications and control hardware and software such as, routers, switches, LAN and other auxiliary data monitoring and distribution systems.
  3. Support, define and manage project's big data management including, data harvest, transfer, processing and archiving during project development, commissioning and operation (if needed). This task requires the engineer to interface with the customer on data management agreement.
  4. Lead development of specifications, drawings and controls and protections strategies for contracted projects.
  5. Participate in continuous improvement of standard processes, procedures, documentation, and tools to effectively deliver a wide range of project solutions.
  6. Ensure that all project engineering deliverables are on schedule / on budget and communicate project status to internal and external audiences via standardized project controls systems.
  7. Become the Project Engineering BESS SME and internal engineering interface. Work with other engineers pre- and post-contract award to optimize customer BESS solutions, use case reviews and commercial proposal strategies and processes.
  8. Maintain project documentation and assist in creating vendor technical specifications and user instructions for optimal use of the designed BESS.
  9. Provide support to Field Service Technicians when troubleshooting in field commissioning and service operations.
  10. Understands and utilizes technical standards for reviews, documentation, and designs such as UL, UN, IEC, ISO, ECE and other engineering standards.
  11. Collaborates with Product Engineering to define, refine and improve BESS systems.
  12. Other duties, responsibilities and activities may change or be assigned at any time with or without notice, in the spirit of an agile design group within an active technology company.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to work independently and on-site and understand how components fit into a larger system
  • Working knowledge of embedded control systems and their applications
  • General knowledge of CAD and the ability to interpret mechanical and electrical engineering drawings.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills for diagnosis and design improvement
  • Familiarity with design for ground fault and EMC and availability to trace down GFI and EMI issues
  • Awareness of safety certification process to standards such as UL
  • Competent skills with communications protocols such as TCP/IP, CAN, i²C and SPI; use of Modbus
  • Capability to select and integrate off-the-shelf component and equipment
  • Strong cross-discipline system skills
  • Understanding of hardware and physical system being controlled is required
  • Comfort and experience with the hazard and safety protocols of high voltage equipment and other aspects of working with large-scale battery systems
  • Ability to self-direct to a goal and achieve independent success
  • A team-player attitude and strong written/verbal communication skills are a must

Education and Experience:

  • BS in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering (MS degree preferred) or related field, and a minimum of 5+ years of experience in all aspects of engineering development and product delivery.
  • Hardware and system design and troubleshooting.
  • Minimum five years' experience designed electronics and developing automated controls
  • Engineering Design Software experience
  • Embedded programming, communication interfaces; I²C, RS-485, CAN bus communication, Modbus TCP, remote IO, or flex IO systems other debugging tools.
  • Linux, embedded systems
  • High voltage electrical systems

Travel:

  • Overnight/North America: 10-25%

Working Conditions:

  • Office Environment - Must be able to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time and occasionally move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc. Required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading. May be required to exert up to 25 pounds of force occasionally to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
  • Factory - The worker may be subject to hazards. Includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, vibration, moving vehicles, electrical current, exposure to temperature changes or exposure to chemicals. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to fumes, airborne particles, odors, dust, mists, and gases. The noise level in the work environment can be loud. Required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading; visual inspection involving small defects, small parts, and/or operation of machines (including inspection); using measurement devices; and/or assembly or fabrication parts at distances close to the eyes. Machinery operation requires the use of safety equipment to include but not limited to eye safety glasses, hearing protectors, work boots, and lab coats. May be required to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
