The Role: Incoming Quality Engineer

The Incoming Quality Engineer is responsible for ensuring that all incoming materials, components, and outsourced parts meet the required specifications and quality standards before they are released to production. This role drives material quality assurance, incoming inspection strategies, supplier performance improvement, and effective non conformance management. The Incoming Quality Engineer works closely with suppliers, cross functional engineering teams, and warehouse/incoming inspection teams to maintain consistent, reliable, and defect free materials for manufacturing.

What You'll Do:

  • Lead and manage incoming inspection processes for raw materials, components, and externally manufactured parts.
  • Establish inspection plans, sampling plans, and acceptance criteria based on engineering drawings, specifications, and risk assessments.
  • Coordinate material disposition for non-conforming items and drive timely resolution through MRB (Material Review Board).
  • Investigate incoming quality issues and work closely with suppliers to implement corrective and preventive actions (8D, RCA, 5 Why, Ishikawa).
  • Develop and maintain material specifications, inspection standards, and quality control procedures.
  • Analyze incoming quality data and monitor supplier performance through KPIs such as PPM, DPPM, defect trends, and response time.
  • Support qualification of new suppliers, materials, and components through PPAP, FAI, and validation builds.
  • Work collaboratively with Purchasing, Supplier Quality, Engineering, and Manufacturing to drive improvements in material quality and process robustness.
  • Perform audits on suppliers and inspection processes where required.
  • Ensure compliance with ISO, IATF, or internal quality management systems.

What We Seek:

  • Strong understanding of quality engineering principles, inspection methods, and measurement techniques.
  • Ability to interpret complex engineering drawings, GD&T, and material specifications.
  • Hands-on working knowledge of metrology instruments (CMM, smart scopes, calipers, micrometers, hardness testers, etc.).
  • Skilled in troubleshooting material defects, performing root-cause analysis, and implementing structured corrective actions.
  • Strong analytical mindset with ability to analyze data, identify trends, and present findings.
  • Effective communicator, able to coordinate with suppliers and internal cross-functional teams.
  • Proactive, detail-oriented, and capable of managing multiple incoming quality issues simultaneously.

Outstanding Candidates Will Have:

  • Experience with incoming inspection in semiconductor, automotive, electronics, or precision manufacturing.
  • Familiarity with supplier quality tools (APQP, PPAP, FAI, PFMEA, Control Plans).
  • Knowledge of statistical tools such as SPC, MSA, Cp/Cpk analysis, sampling plans (ANSI/ASQ Z1.4), and risk-based quality approaches.
  • Certification such as ASQ CQE, CQA, Six Sigma Green Belt/Black Belt.
  • Experience working directly with global suppliers to drive quality improvements.
  • Ability to develop digital inspection workflows or automation using vision systems or advanced metrology.
