Product Engineer

This opportunity is located within our Ensign-Bickford Aerospace & Defense Company business, a global leader of mission-critical hardware and systems solutions including precision energetics systems and innovative explosive solutions.

EBAD is seeking a Product Engineer with experience working in a manufacturing/machining environment. The Product Engineer will be responsible for evaluating machine center value stream and lead in the lean manufacturing and processes. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in the design, development, optimization, and support of machine center process and process flows.

This role is based on 2nd shift, with typical hours of 2pm - 12am.

Responsibilities:

This position supports and reports directly to the Product Engineering Lead. The Product Engineer (PE) is the technical lead on internal and external projects and is responsible for all technical and schedule aspects of the project/product throughout the machining life cycle. Primary duties include:

  • Develop and maintain manufacturing documentation, including work instructions, routings, process specs, tooling requirements, and inspection methods.
  • Collaborate with quality assurance to analyze defects, perform root cause analysis, and implement corrective actions.
  • Troubleshoot manufacturing problems and drive improvements in quality, efficiency, and cost.
  • Coordinate with cross-functional teams to ensure production readiness for new designs and documentation approval.
  • Interface with machinists, operators, inspectors, and supervisors to support shop floor operations.
  • Apply Lean principles to implement standard work, point-of-use tooling, optimized material presentation, and process improvements.
  • Design and develop automated test fixtures, assembly tools, and manufacturing cell layouts (tooling, equipment, and machinery).
  • Conduct PFMEAs, risk assessments, and ensure technical compliance throughout production processes.
  • Support CNC programming and tooling selection for new and existing products.
  • Monitor production milestones and ensure timely completion of tasks and deliverables.
  • Ensure compliance with safety, environmental, and quality standards.
  • Lead process improvement initiatives to enhance product quality, reduce cycle time, and increase throughput.

Requirements:

The successful candidate must have a BS/MS in an engineering discipline, preferably mechanical engineering or manufacturing engineering and manufacturing or related engineering experience. Additionally, it is desired that the candidate has experience in the following areas:

  • Knowledge of space vehicle mechanisms and systems
  • CAD, 3-D modeling, assembly creation, drawings and GD&T.
  • Design of tooling and fixtures
  • Design for Manufacturing methods and techniques
  • Strong interpersonal and leadership skills with demonstrated ability to lead programs/projects.
  • Formal problem analysis and resolution
  • Project management skills with the ability to document, plan, and execute programs
  • Working with aerospace products and processes.
  • Continuous Improvement and Lean Manufacturing practices
  • Enterprise/Manufacturing Resource Planning (ERP/MRP) systems.
  • MS Office– Excel, Word and Powerpoint. Familiar with and able to work in MS Project.

Nice to Haves:

  • Experience in a high-mix, low-volume manufacturing environment
  • Familiarity with GD&T and tolerance stack-up analysis
  • Knowledge of metallurgy and material selection for machined components
  • Proficiency with CAM software.
  • Working knowledge of ISO 9001, AS9100, or other quality management systems
  • Experience with automation, robotics integration, or digital work instructions
  • Involvement in facility layout or production line design
  • Lean Six Sigma certification (Green Belt or higher)
  • Familiarity with MES, SPC, or real-time data collection systems
  • Basic programming or scripting experience in one or more of the following:
    • Python, C++ – data analysis, scripting, automation
    • VBA – Excel macros for reporting and documentation automation
    • SQL – querying and analyzing production or quality databases
    • G-code – CNC programming and machine-level operations
  • Strong presentation skills and ability to communicate technical details to non-technical stakeholders

Compensation:

Salary Range: $90,000 - $120,000 per year. Salary is determined by the applicant's education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, internal equity, and alignment with market data.
