Principal Software Engineer

The NI ADG (Aerospace, Defense, Government Business Unit) Customer Centric Solutions Team is seeking to hire an experienced Principal Software Engineer to work on custom engineering opportunities that enable the sale of standard NI Products. The primary responsibilities of this position are to work with NI customers, sales personnel, engineering teams, alliance partners, and contract manufacturers to define, document, design, deploy, and sustain NI products tailored to meet specific customer requirements for large-scale turnkey engineering solutions. The ideal candidate has experience and knowledge regarding NI products and system-level design.

In this role, your responsibilities will be:

  • Working in a cross-functional development team developing custom test systems for prime ADG customers.
  • Developing instrument drivers, test sequences, and applications using LabVIEW and TestStand for a wide range of NI and third-party test equipment.
  • Driving efficiency improvements for our systems design process through the adoption of new tools and processes.
  • Interacting with a wide variety of NI customers, NI staff, external alliance partners and suppliers in support of designing, implementing and sustaining custom solutions.
  • Interface with our Systems Architects and Electrical Engineering team to provide strategic design implementation guidance to best enable testability of our systems.
  • Providing handoff and direct support of software test applications to customer engineering teams, including developing necessary documentation.
  • Defining and implementing system test plans, managing milestones and holding reviews to assure systems meet requirements and readiness for deployment.
  • Verification of the developed tests to ensure compliance with and coverage of requirements.
  • Traveling as needed domestically and abroad in support of project objectives.

You facilitate an open dialogue with a wide variety of contributors and stakeholders. You analyze multiple and diverse sources of information to define problems accurately before moving to solutions. You persist in the face of challenges and setbacks. You experiment with a wide range of existing technologies while applying new and emerging options that can enhance organizational outcomes.

For this role, you will need:

  • B. S. Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or other Engineering discipline from an accredited institution.
  • 7+ years of software development experience.
  • Experience developing automated test software using PXI chassis and interfacing with some of the following: analog I/O cards, digital I/O cards, DMMs, oscilloscopes, National Instrument's switching and signal routing systems, data acquisition devices, power supplies, RF analyzers, and RF power sensors.
  • Knowledge of hardware interfaces, such as GPIB, USB, Ethernet, and serial communication protocols.
  • Understanding of high-level programming languages (LabVIEW, TestStand, C/C++/C#, Python).
  • Strong work ethic and drive to succeed.
  • Demonstrated ability to:
    • Work effectively in an inclusive, multi-cultural development environment.
    • Problem-solve effectively โ€“ diagnose technical issues and propose reasonable solutions.
    • Take initiative, be a self-starter, and work independently.
    • Quickly learn applicable technology, systems, and products.

Preferred qualifications that set you apart:

  • Understanding of electrical engineering, electronics, and computer architecture.
  • Experience developing and using system electrical schematics.
  • Cross-platform development (Windows/Linux) experience.
  • National Instruments Certification in LabVIEW.
  • Experience developing in Python, C# or other high-level languages.
  • Experience of providing direct technical support to customers.
