About the Role
The Lead Systems Engineer is a hands-on technical leader who will help establish and strengthen the Systems Engineering and Operations capabilities for the TIO team in Mexico City. This role combines deep technical contribution with people and process leadership. You will design and operate scalable, reliable systems; improve automation and operational practices; and help build a collaborative, inclusive, and high-performing team. This role is well suited to someone who enjoys building foundations, working across teams, and balancing technical delivery with long-term sustainability.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, and operate cloud infrastructure using Infrastructure as Code, with a focus on reliability, automation, and operational stability.
- Troubleshoot, resolve, and prevent system and infrastructure issues in production environments.
- Establish and continuously improve processes, tools, and standards that support operational excellence.
- Contribute to and advise on system and application architecture to support scalability, resilience, and performance.
- Support hiring, onboarding, and development of future team members through mentorship, feedback, and collaboration.
- Work closely with architecture, product, security, and FinOps partners to align technical solutions with business, compliance, and cost goals.
- Promote a culture of psychological safety, learning, shared ownership, and continuous improvement.
- Communicate clearly and thoughtfully, using data and context to support decision-making.
- Build strong working relationships across teams and functions within Elsevier Health Education.
Requirements
- Significant experience in systems engineering, cloud infrastructure, DevOps, or related areas, including leading or influencing technical initiatives.
- Hands-on experience with cloud platforms (AWS preferred or equivalent), Infrastructure as Code tools (such as Terraform), and container orchestration platforms (Kubernetes).
- Experience with automation and CI/CD practices using common tools (for example, GitHub Actions, Jenkins, or similar).
- Ability to think holistically about system design, reliability, and operational efficiency.
- Experience collaborating with cross-functional partners such as product, security, architecture, or finance.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, with an interest in coaching, mentoring, and supporting team growth.
- Curiosity and a willingness to learn, adapt, and improve how systems and teams work.
- Willingness to go into the office twice a week in Reforma.
Preferred Certifications
- AWS certifications (e.g., AWS Solutions Architect)
- Relevant DevOps, security, or architecture credentials (helpful but not required).
