Position Summary

The Engineer I/II position is the entry level and intermediate levels, respectively, of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees in the Engineer I/II position solve problems in engineering areas of specialization with close supervision. An Engineer I/II is expected to develop skills, and the ability to work with greater independence. An Engineer I/II has knowledge of fundamental concepts and procedures.

This position is for a Civil Engineer on our Substation Engineering team located in Duke Energy's regional headquarters in downtown Cincinnati, OH. This work group is responsible for the design of new and existing distribution and transmission substations from 4kV through 345kV in Ohio and Kentucky. Projects range from routine equipment modifications and installations to the complete design of new substations. The position requires the individual to be able to manage work between multiple projects simultaneously to ensure timely release of engineering designs. The individual will utilize a variety of tools and techniques to complete an engineering design, including current design specifications, pertinent code manuals, computer aided design/drafting software, and other reference sources. The final product is an engineering release package consisting of pertinent drawings, permits, bills of material, etc.

Responsibilities

The responsibilities of this position include:

  • Structural steel design
  • Reinforced concrete design
  • Foundation designs including mat, spread footer, and drilled shaft
  • Review site development designs
  • Drawing review for assigned projects
  • Engineering support during construction
  • Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of problems of increasing scope and complexity.
  • Contributes to team decision-making in the accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities; deals with changing priorities and differing situations and makes decisions that may affect the work of the team.
  • Prepare thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and sketches related to well-defined problems and analysis of increasing scope and complexity.
  • Conducts engineering and related studies; completes routine engineering projects with minimal oversight with increasing ability to independently manage project schedules and interfaces; increasingly competent to design, operate and maintain systems with moderate impact on existing systems.
  • Possesses and applies the fundamental concepts, practices and procedures, proficient in technical and analytical competencies.
  • Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities. Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills. Maintains accurate records and files.
  • Supports the company’s goals and represents the company positively and professionally.

Required Basic Qualifications

  • Engineer I: Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited program
  • Engineer II: Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited program, 2 years minimum required related experience

Desired Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science Civil Engineering
  • Passing grade on the Engineering Fundamentals Exam.
  • Increasingly proficient in principles of project management.
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly grasp new techniques, deal with rapid changes in priorities, and remain calm and effective in stressful situations.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet required deadlines while simultaneously completing other tasks.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with peers, partners, customers, and the public by adapting to various personality styles in a professional manner.
  • Experience in the Electric Utility Industry.
  • Experience in electric utility substation design.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office
  • Experience with AutoCAD 2010 or newer
  • Experience with (Autodesk) Inventor
  • Experience with structural design software (Ram Elements, STAAD.Pro, RISA-3D, etc)
  • Experience with structural steel and reinforced concrete designs
  • Experience with foundation design including spread footer and drilled shaft foundations

Working Conditions

  • Hybrid – Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable commute to their designated Duke Energy facility.

Specific Requirements

  • Must have obtained Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from an ABET accredited program
  • A Master’s degree in Civil Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree.
