Health Information Management (HIM) Specialist I

In accordance with established policies and Federal/State law, the Health Information Management (HIM) Specialist I will assist DaVita HIM operations by receiving and reviewing PHI (Protected Health Information) in relation to Third-Party Requests for ROI (Release of Information), Patient and Government/Payor Audits. This position fosters respect for patient privacy by maintaining confidentiality in all aspects of role. Position promotes positive customer relations through prompt and courteous service in this fast-paced and high-volume environment.

Example of daily responsibilities includes:

  • Intake and review a high volume of medical records requests for HIPAA Compliance
  • Enter PHI and other data points from medical records requests into internal system
  • Review medical records requests for HIPAA Compliance
  • Provide excellent customer service when working with patients, 3rd party requestors and insurance payors
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with clinical personnel, teammates, and insurance representatives
  • Collaborate with other revenue operations teams to ensure seamless processes across teams
  • Partner with clinics teammates such as Insurance counselors, social workers and facility administrators to ensure timely and accurate insurance information
  • Help identify process changes and opportunities for continuous improvements
  • Maintain current patient account information at all times
  • Maintain confidentiality of all company and patient information in accordance with HIPAA regulations and DaVita policies

Other duties could include:

  • May be asked to work overtime as needed
  • Attend team meetings, phone conferences, and training as needed
  • Know, understand and follow teammate guidelines, employment policies, and department or company procedures

Experience and required skills:

  • No previous healthcare experience is required
  • Excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills

Minimum qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Basic computer skills and proficiency in MS Word, Excel, and Outlook

Training provided by DaVita:

  • Knowledge of revenue cycle, insurance rules, and regulations for federal, state, and/or managed care payers in multiple states
  • Knowledge of medical billing and reimbursement practices
  • Usage of DaVita billing and reimbursement systems
  • Basic medical reimbursement terminology
  • Basic knowledge of healthcare reimbursement accounting principles

The Wage Range for the role is $16.50 - $24.50 per hour. If a candidate is hired, they will be paid at least the minimum wage according to their geographical jurisdiction and the exemption status for the position.
