Staff Software Engineer – Ai & React

The Retail Analytics team supports CVS Health's Frontstore business to improve consumer experience and business performance through data science and AI/ ML technologies. Our cross-functional team is agile and work at the forefront of delivering high-visibility products for key CVS Retail strategic priorities. Within our team, we believe a cutting-edge product can only be delivered if every aspect of the solution from data to model to front end UI is fully designed and developed by SMEs within the team.

As Staff Software Engineer – AI & React, you will own the scalable architecture and technical delivery of AI applications and custom UI (React/ TypeScript) that facilitate CVS teams in driving insights and decisions. You will work in close collaboration with our software engineering and product teams. You will be a champion in enabling LLMs, MCP server tooling, multi-agent communication, external agent integration and other emerging frameworks to develop AI for retail analytics use cases.

This is a senior individual contributor role with a track to grow into managerial responsibilities over time.

This role will:

  • Design, build and own the agentic AI architecture (including multi-agent communication) for our retail analytics software platform
  • Design, build and own the React/ TypeScript application architecture and APIs connecting to Snowflake, Palantir Foundry and Thoughtspot (BI platform) as our key platforms
  • Define, build and monitor safety and reliability standards
  • Lead, advise and orchestrate AI application development (including user and system prompt optimization), in close collaboration with cross-functional teams
  • Lead technical design reviews for all major components across the AI & React/ TypeScript portfolio; make final calls on architectural trade-offs and concerns.
  • Upskill the broader team to adopt broader skillset in React/ TypeScript/ AI over time
  • Stay current on AI best practices and emerging technologies to recommend best practices

Required Qualifications

  • 8+ years of hands-on software engineering experience
  • 5+ years on programming in React - deep expertise in component architecture, state management, performance optimization, and building complex data-rich interfaces.
  • 5+ years on programming in TypeScript - advanced typing patterns, interface-first API development, and shared type libraries across frontend and backend.
  • 5+ years of development experience in cloud-based platforms (Azure, GCP, or AWS).
  • Demonstrated experience in enterprise-scale AI application development (LLMs, embeddings, vector search, RAG pipelines, prompt engineering and fine-tuning)
  • Demonstrated ability to lead complex projects with limited supervision and high accountability
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
  • Track record of mentoring senior engineers and leading technical delivery for multi-engineer teams

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience designing and delivering agentic AI systems — agent orchestration loops, MCP server architecture, tool schema design, LLM function integration, and guardrail enforcement.
  • Experience designing multi-agent frameworks or A2A communication protocols
  • Experience defining integration standards for external AI agents or third-party LLM services
  • Experience with Palantir Foundry
  • Experience with ThoughtSpot Everywhere SDK
  • Experience with Snowflake
  • Retail merchandising domain expertise (pricing, assortment, promotions, category management)

Education

  • BA/BS degree required — Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or related field.
  • MBA preferred, particularly for candidates on the engineering manager track.

The typical pay range for this role is:

$142,140.00 - $284,280.00

This pay range represents the base hourly rate or base annual full-time salary for all positions in the job grade within which this position falls. The actual base salary offer will depend on a variety of factors including experience, education, geography and other relevant factors. This position is eligible for a CVS Health bonus, commission or short-term incentive program in addition to the base pay range listed above. This position also includes an award target in the company's equity award program.
