Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry. This segment is classified into two main product groupings – carrier network and enterprise network.

Role Purpose

To investigate and recommend appropriate fluid dynamic techniques, technology and processes for work conducted through the Imaging and Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (IFD). The result culminating in improvement for manufacturing technology and processes. This role supports all Corning business divisions and all stages of product innovation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work with the existing IFD team to execute and deliver project objectives
  • Engage with projects regarding fluidic impact upon technology, process or product metrics. Propose and execute workstream to address said impact and deliver solution recommendation based on collected evidence and knowledge
  • Design and deploy custom imaging/optical diagnostic systems integrated with secondary sensor systems, motion equipment, and various flow controls systems
  • Execute specific optical measurements and associated data analysis
  • Conduct hands on work in a laboratory, engineering, or manufacturing environment
  • Communicate project status and updates, including documentation
  • Maintain laboratory, process equipment, and laboratory materials
  • Record and perform preliminary analysis of process data

Required Education

  • Deep knowledge of one or more aspects of fluid dynamics such as microfluidics, viscous flow, aerodynamics, hydrodynamics, also turbulent flows, two phase flows and reacting flows
  • Must include both physics and statistical knowledge of said fluidic area
  • Experience with one or more optical diagnostics applied to fluidic specialty
  • Knowledge of photon scattering processes pertaining to fluidic specialty and impact upon measurement accuracy
  • Experience with imaging/optical hardware; optics, and illumination sources (lasers, LEDs, etc)
  • Experience writing custom image processing software, (Matlab, C++, Lavision, or comparable language) and implementing parallel processing
  • Ability to define and write unique feature tracking/identification, and image segmentation algorithms
  • Knowledge of statistical analysis tools with respect to image processing
  • PhD in experimental fluid dynamics or equivalent experience utilizing custom optical diagnostics and image processing software

Desired Experiences

  • Exposure or experience with automation hardware and associated control systems via labview (translation stages, pumps, solenoids etc)
  • Experience assembling laboratory scale gas or liquid flow systems
  • Experience managing and processing large data sets (10's terabytes per project)
  • Learns quickly and independently
  • Ability to build relationships across functional groups

The range for this position is $82,203.00 - $113,030.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education.
