Temporary Research Support - SP

Department of Public and Ecosystem Health in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University seeks to hire a temporary research support position to assist in the processing and analysis of fish samples. The analyses will compare local and store-bought fish relevant to local communities. Analyses will include beneficial nutritional components as well as contaminants. The researcher will support sample collection, sample processing, sample analysis, and shipping of samples to partner laboratories, and other responsibilities as required.

Responsibilities

Sample Collection

  • Plan and execute field sampling protocols as necessary and/or receive samples collected by partners.
  • Maintain detailed records of collection sites, dates, times, and environmental conditions.

Sample Processing and Analysis

  • Prepare samples for analysis using appropriate preservation techniques and storage methods.
  • Label, catalog, and organize samples according to laboratory protocols and database systems.
  • Conduct preliminary sample preparation.
  • Document all processing steps and maintain accurate sample tracking records.
  • Ensure compliance with quality control standards throughout processing procedures.
  • Perform analytical tests and measurements, as needed.
  • Coordinate with partner laboratories to facilitate field sample processing.

Sample Shipping and Logistics

  • Package samples according to regulatory requirements and shipping guidelines.
  • Coordinate with partner laboratories to ensure timely delivery and proper handling of samples.
  • Track shipments and maintain communication with receiving laboratories regarding sample status.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Assist with data entry and database management for sample tracking systems.
  • Support report writing and documentation of research findings.
  • Collaborate with research team members on project planning and execution.
  • Other responsibilities as needed.

Requirements

  • Experience with relevant analyses of fish samples.
  • BA in ecotoxicology or relevant field.

Position Details

The position will be in September through December 2025. Work will be carried out in agreed upon facilities throughout NY to allow for field sample collection and processing as needed. This will be a 4-month, full time position with pay at $18/hour.
