Public Services Assistant III

Working under the supervision of the Head of Interlibrary Services, and in coordination with the general direction of the Borrowing and Lending Coordinators, this position assists in a variety of tasks to ensure the smooth operation of the Interlibrary Loan (ILL) and Borrow Direct services, both locally and with libraries around the world.

Daily duties may include:

  • Work with counterparts from libraries around the world in providing information and assistance regarding obtaining material from Cornell University Library. Tasks require considerable judgment and thorough knowledge of CUL and ILL policies and procedures.
  • Help patrons with questions about their ILL and Borrow Direct requests, problem-solve and suggest solutions.
  • Perform simple and complex bibliographic verification, searching, and sending of ILL requests.
  • Supports digitization services for ILL and document delivery.
  • Maintain the records, processing, and billing for circulating interlibrary loan material.
  • Solve workflow problems with Borrow Direct, Interlibrary Loan, and local Document Delivery.
  • Answer questions from staff in other library units or departments regarding ILL and Borrow Direct policies.
  • Communicate regularly with staff in other library units or departments to coordinate movement of materials and problem-solve issues as they arise.

This position is typically performed on campus in Olin Library Monday through Friday. Start and end times between the core business hours of 8:00AM to 5:00PM will be determined by your supervisor and business needs.

  • Associate's degree and up to 2 years relevant experience or equivalent combination.
  • Comfortable working with unfamiliar languages.
  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated strong organizational skills and aptitude for detailed work.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with other team members to execute departmental goals.
  • Demonstrated flexibility and adaptability to changing work environment while providing consistent and accurate information.
  • Strong customer service orientation.
  • Demonstrated experience with new and emerging technologies; must be able to work with specialized desktop applications and the internet and show demonstrated ability to learn new systems quickly and effectively.
  • Ability to cultivate and develop inclusive working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and community members.
