Assists in the preparation, delivery and clean up of patient care during the intra-operative phase. Contributes to the smooth operation of the unit.
Essential Functions
Obtains and organizes necessary equipment, sterile supplies and instruments for each surgical case. Assembles surgical supplies for rooms and case tables. Opens sterile supplies for surgical procedures. Cleans equipment (including decontamination and sterilization of instruments), work areas and reusable supplies and returns unneeded equipment to appropriate department. Also follows-up on equipment needing repairs.
Assists the anesthesiologist in the insertion of the intravenous lines (IVs) and the placement of epidural catheters, and monitoring devices (Swan-Ganz, transesophageal echocardiogram (TEE), arterial lines, etc.) related to the administration of anesthetic agents. Facilitates with induction and intubation process. Assists in patient care such as positioning and assisting with airway maneuvers. Performs point of care testing as required.
Assists in providing ongoing maintenance for anesthesia machines and other related equipment, including troubleshooting, removal and replacement of parts. Stocks anesthesia carts and anesthesia storage room. Also works with clinical engineering and technical support, acting as the first line of repair.
Handles surgical specimens under the direction of a Registered Nurse (RN) and delivery of the specimens(s) to designated area.
Assists with patient care as directed by the RN.
Assists with "turnover" of surgical suites between cases.
Transports patients to and from the surgical area.
Enters and retrieves information from the computer, as needed. May perform clerical duties, as needed.
Qualifications
Required High School Diploma or equivalent
Preferred Associate's Degree in related field
2 years of relevant experience Patient Care Preferred
1 year of relevant experience Operating Room Preferred
CRT-Basic Life Support (BLS) - AHA American Heart Association 60 Days required Or
CRT-Basic Life Support (BLS) - ARC American Red Cross 60 Days required
