Project Engineer – Applied Mechanics Lab

Based in our Sidney, Ohio location, you will assist the Applied Mechanics (AM) team in providing laboratory services and engineering recommendations to Copeland business units. You will focus on providing timely, value-added solutions to complex engineering problems and providing engineering consultation to the Product Engineering Groups. As an AM engineer, you will demonstrate the ability to proactively engage with customers, provide engineering recommendations, plan, manage progress of the work, and communicate project status and results. This is an exciting opportunity to join a deep technical engineering team working in a fast paced, innovative, and global environment with the objective of assuring that Copeland HVACR products are meeting and exceeding customer expectations of reliability and durability.

As a I/II/Senior Project Engineer – Applied Mechanics Lab, you will:

  • Complete assigned projects. Assignments may include project planning, engineering testing, FEA, programming, test fixture design, instrumentation, data analysis, writing reports, and presenting information to customers.
  • Collaborate with Applied Mechanics lab team to effectively communicate project status, recommendations, and solutions to internal and external customers.
  • Act as a consultant to the product groups in areas of engineering expertise related to component and compressor durability.
  • Review project requirements and objectives with customers and develop tests and test methodologies to meet their objectives.
  • Use physics-driven analysis and engineering skills to derive conclusions and provide engineering solutions.

Required education, experience, & skills:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field and a minimum of one (1) year of related experience.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills related to failure analysis, statistics, fatigue, and vibration.
  • Consistent track record of using engineering principles and creative thinking in solving complex problems.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills and the ability and desire to self-develop technically.
  • 3D design modeling experience.
  • Excellent skills in the following: MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States - Sponsorship will not be provided for this position.

Preferred education, experience, & skills:

  • Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field and a minimum of two (2) years of related experience.
  • Experience in laboratory practices and procedures, mechanical component testing, statistics, instrumentation, machine design, stress/strength calculations, data analysis, experimental stress analysis (strain gauges), fatigue testing, vibration testing, compressor design, HVACR and report writing.
  • Deep experience at least two (2) of the following engineering software: nCode, LabVIEW, MATLAB, NX Simcenter, SuperSmith, ReliaSoft, and Minitab.
  • Experience developing novel lab tests with data acquisition/test controls.
