Marine Engineer Opportunity

The Maritime Engineering Operation (MEO) of Serco North America is seeking a motivated and experienced Marine Engineer to join our team working in our Arlington, VA location. MEO supports the US Navy and other commercial maritime customers on a variety of programs and is involved in all stages of ship and ship system design. As a Marine Engineer, you will receive technical guidance and training from the more experienced technical staff and apply your marine engineering experience to perform analyses and prepare engineering deliverables in support of the design of ships, craft, and other floating structures.
In this position you will:
- Perform auxiliary, fluid, mechanical, engine, and propulsion system design or review.
- Apply marine engineering knowledge in accordance with applicable regulatory body rules, regulations, and industry standards to develop analyses and products.
- Participate or lead in the development and validation of design and engineering requirements, preparation of specifications, and provide inputs to technical reports and presentations.
- Perform design integrations, coordinating inputs from various marine engineering and other engineering disciplines, such as naval architecture and structures, to establish principal characteristics and design features.
- Provide concept and feasibility design studies of auxiliary systems including pumping and distribution for fuel, seawater, fresh water, and other fluid systems.
- Provide concept and feasibility studies for equipment including refrigeration units, pumps, motors, and HVAC systems.
- Provide system design support for auxiliary and fluids systems from the conceptual design phase through Detailed Design and Construction (DD&C).
- Provide onsite engineering support for test site and shipyard construction activities, as required.
- Develop machinery arrangements and configurations illustrating primary functional allocation of spaces within the ship considering locations and adjacency constraints, perform special studies including access and maintenance analyses, assist in detailed layouts of machinery spaces.
- Conduct failure analysis and provide engineering solutions via change packages or technical reports.
- Review design proposals and specifications and assist with budgeting, cost estimation, and project planning.
- Participate or lead scheduled project review sessions and meetings with representatives from other engineering disciplines and customers on technical and engineering issues.
- Prepare documentation, reports, and project plans to describe activities planned and accomplished, status reports, letters, memoranda, messages, and contact reports.
- Prepare and present formal briefings to government or commercial clients.
- Comply with all corporate policies and procedures, including quality assurance and security procedures, in the performance of duties.
To be successful in this position, you will have:
- A Bachelors degree from an ABET accredited university in Marine Engineering or a related engineering field such as Ocean Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, etc.
- 5 years of related and progressive experience in the Marine Engineering field.
- Knowledge of the practical application of engineering science and technology. This includes applying principles, techniques, procedures, and equipment to the design and production of marine craft.
- Knowledge of government or other contracting environments relating to technical, scientific, and analytical services.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to clearly convey technical concepts and results to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Willingness to adapt to changing project requirements and learn new technologies and tools as needed.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a secret security clearance.
- Ability to travel up to 10%
Additional desired experience and skills:
- Experience with AUTOCAD.
- Experience with 3D modeling software such as Inventor, Solidworks, Navisworks, or Ship Constructor.
- Experience with PIPE-FLO, PIPE-FLOW, or Fathom.
- Experience with ABS/USCG rules and regulations.
- Experience with design, build, and test projects.
