Director Of Pharmacy

The Director of Pharmacy provides an enhanced focus on strategic, operational, financial, and clinical leadership that directly impacts organizational performance. The Director plans, integrates, and evaluates human, material, and fiscal resources required to provide pharmacy services. This role focuses on establishing standards, goals, and direction for pharmacy services/programs. Facilitates, coordinates, and manages staff and financial resources to achieve pharmaceutical, distribution and consultative services which support nursing and medical management of patient care. Ensures implementation of hospital and pharmacy standards and employee competencies. This role will also play a critical role in supporting staff development, interdisciplinary collaboration, and the implementation of technology solutions, all of which contribute to higher quality care, operational efficiency, and organizational sustainability. This position will primarily support and lead the pharmacy team at the Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital.

Essential Job Function:

  • Identifies and develops departmental goals and objectives utilizing trend data with customer and staff input; develops and maintains an ongoing department organizational structure to meet program goals; and maintains and assures compliance with departmental policies and procedures and The Joint Commission standards, state/federal regulations and community/national standards.
  • Evaluates and ensures safe, effective medication use processes and medication procurement policies. Proactively addresses medication shortages, evaluates, develops and communicates the department's performance improvement plan. Evaluates, develops, and implements plans to enhance customer satisfaction.
  • Assists in the development of the annual budget, performs variance analysis and develops action plans to ensure targets are met, evaluates and recommends department cost-containment activities in accordance with system initiatives, provides opportunities for cost savings, and strategically plans and prepares for capital needs.
  • Provides leadership for and personally demonstrates Cone Health values of caring for our patients, our coworkers and our community, keeping what is best for the patient at the center of all decision making. Promotes teamwork among staff, peers, physicians, and others. Strives to align with standard approach to patient care across acute care facilities.
  • Participates in and provides leadership for meetings, task forces and committees; completes assignments per/ahead of schedule. Directs and leads staff to focus on and achieve patient satisfaction.
  • Anticipates, evaluates, and determines human resources needs for department services, ensuring human resource functions meet organizational guidelines (involving recruiting, hiring, scheduling, and disciplinary processes), and evaluating staff performance in accordance with organizational and professional guidelines. Facilitates and develops effective work teams. Manages retention and turnover rates to meet organizational objectives. Develops and maintains an environment that supports learning and professional development.
  • Serves as pharmacy license holder, ensures department is in compliance with JCAHO, DEA, NCBOP, DHHS, etc regulations.

Education:

  • Required: BS Pharmacy or PharmD
  • Preferred: Master of Health Administration, Master of Science in Pharmacy or Pharmacy Administration, Master of Business Administration, or other advanced degree in pharmacy or healthcare leadership.

Experience:

  • Required: 5 years in a hospital Pharmacy with 3 years supervisory experience
  • Preferred: PGY1 and PGY2 ASHP Accredited Pharmacy Residencies or equivalent work experience. Experience with budget, financial management, and staffing methodologies. Experience with implementing improvement processes, preferred lean methodologies.

Licensure/Certification/Listing:

  • Required: Current active license to practice pharmacy in North Carolina, or eligible to obtain North Carolina pharmacy license within two months of hire.
