Job Summary

Ability to do the work of a Boiler Plant & Chiller Operator without more than normal supervision. Must have the ability to perform some tasks including operating and monitoring of high-pressure Boiler Plants and auxiliary equipment. Ability to recognize and detect abnormal high pressure boiler plant and steam system operating conditions and take immediate actions to eliminate emergency situations and restore normal operating conditions; collect and test water samples and determine the amount and type of chemicals needed to control or meet various boiler chemistry parameters and achieve desired results. Perform constant meter readings and record findings for fuel oil supply and steam production. Work under the supervision of a Plant Director or Chief-level employee who reviews work for completion. Work with and direct 3rd grade operators. Healthcare experience strongly preferred.

Qualifications/Experience:

Experience with the starting, operating, adjusting, and stopping of high-pressure steam boilers fueled by natural gas and fuel oil, auxiliary equipment, and other equipment in a steam plantOperates and controls auxiliary equipment requiring continuous attention to monitor efficiency and control formation of pollutants in accordance with local, state, and federal pollution control requirementsOperates, controls, and maintained a variety of auxiliary equipment such as centrifugal pumps, heat exchangers, fans, deaerators, flash tanks, condensate receivers, water softeners, steam traps, steam PRV's, OSY valves, VFD'sMaintained constant observation and record keeping of flow meters, charts, production/supply meters etc., to determine boiler plant status, whether it is meeting or exceeding demands, rate of fuel consumption, etcPerformed various operational repairs and preventive maintenance on boilers, cleaned burners, oils and greases moving parts, packs valves and pumps, cleans water/oil strainers and performed other routine operational maintenanceLocated and repaired limited electrical problems in burner controls, safety devices and other equipment, including replacing flame scannersCollected water samples and tested feed water, boiler water and condensate using standard chemical tests; determined appropriate treatment to control corrosion and chemical concentrations; removed impurities and entrapped gases; and stabilized fluctuating water conditionsAdjust blowdown methods and chemical feed pumps as necessary.

An applicant for a Class 1 Steam Engineer shall comply with all DC regulations related to the operation and maintenance of boilers including having all necessary code required qualifications.
