Senior Software Engineer

You'll help modernise and improve the bank's technology landscape, working on critical platforms to deliver simpler, faster, and more secure solutions for millions of customers, all while embracing innovation and the latest tech to future-proof the business.
As a Senior Software Engineer at CommBank, you'll be at the forefront of our cloud initiatives, designing, developing, and maintaining key applications—including customisations to the Subledger—and delivering new capabilities critical to finance technology. This role combines hands-on engineering with API and AWS cloud development, requiring close collaboration with cross-functional teams to ensure high-quality, innovative software solutions that improve the lives of our 17 million+ customers.
Overall, to be successful in this role you will:
- Design, develop, and optimize PL/SQL code, database schemas, and SQL queries to support scalable and high-performance applications.
- Build secure, scalable RESTful APIs and cloud-based solutions using AWS services, ensuring robust integration and documentation.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate security practices into the development lifecycle and contribute to DevSecOps culture.
- Participate in continuous improvement, operational support, and agile processes to deliver high-quality, innovative software solutions.
We're interested in hearing from people who:
- Have extensive experience in Oracle database technologies, experience in PL/SQL development, and a commitment to integrating security practices within the development lifecycle as part of a DevSecOps culture.
- Have experience in designing and developing RESTful APIs.
- Are proficient in AWS cloud services and tools for development and deployment.
- Have knowledge on DevSecOps practices and principles.
- Have proven experience in operational engagements required to bring a product to life (e.g. Risk, Security, Incident, Change, Problem, Monitoring, Supplier Governance, Defect Review, Scalability, Automation)
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including developers, testers, and product owners, to deliver high-quality software solutions.
- Have excellent communication skills (written and verbal)
- Have a problem-solving mindset with a focus on designing and optimizing data processing
- Exhibit a proactive approach, constantly seeking innovative solutions to complex technical challenges. Experienced working with cross-functional teams to understand business requirements and translate them into technical solutions. Participate in agile ceremonies and contribute to team goals.
We use a broad range of tools, languages, and frameworks. We don't expect you to know them all but experience or exposure with some of these (or equivalents) will set you up for success in this team:
- Develop, optimize, and maintain complex PL/SQL code to support business requirements and improve performance.
- Write and enhance efficient SQL queries for data retrieval, manipulation, and ongoing application needs.
- Skilled in DevSecOps practices, including collaboration with DevSecOps teams to integrate security into the development lifecycle, and proficient with source control and CI/CD tools such as GitHub, GitHub Actions, Artifactory, and Jenkins.
- Experienced in data modelling, data mapping, API development, and application development using technologies like .NET, Java, and Python, as well as building and deploying containerized applications.
- Cloud technologies and experience building/deploying cloud based applications
- Experience in Banking industry (in particular Finance accounting)
- Understanding of Ledger data such as GL, etc will be highly regarded.
