About CIO for Technology
The CIO for Technology team ensures that CommBank has a world-class engineering capability and is at the forefront of technology, using innovative and emerging technology to help our customers and support our Group Strategy. Focused on innovation, best practices, and collaboration, the team seeks a Technical Product Owner to work with our global engineering community to use AI assisted tools and capabilities in ways that improve the engineering experience and enhance productivity and engineering capability across the bank.
About AI Powered Engineering
Through our partnerships with leading LLM and AI Developer Platforms like Anthropic, we're providing our over 7000 engineers with world-class AI powered engineering tools and capabilities. Our team is passionate about working across the organisation to unlock the potential of these tools and capabilities and help our engineers be more productive and less burdened by repetitive time-consuming tasks.
What exactly will you do
Lead a cross-functional squad with an Engineering Lead to deliver an AI-powered engineering product suite (e.g., code assistants, test-generation, documentation automation, incident copilots), providing clear delivery plans, measurable outcomes, and transparent reporting.
Own and execute the product roadmap—prioritising backlog items, defining OKRs, and orchestrating discovery, experimentation, and incremental releases with a strong focus on value realisation.
Partner with engineering squads, AI researchers, platform teams, and risk/compliance to assess use cases, pilot tools, validate hypotheses, and scale proven capabilities across the Bank.
Translate customer and developer needs into actionable requirements and acceptance criteria; ensure robust telemetry, feedback loops, and continuous improvement.
Navigate a complex enterprise environment—aligning stakeholders, resolving cross-team dependencies, and managing risks, controls, and regulatory considerations associated with AI use in software engineering.
Facilitate agile ceremonies (stand-ups, planning, reviews, retros), remove blockers, optimise flow, and improve delivery predictability and velocity.
Establish product health metrics (adoption, utilisation, quality, cycle time, DORA metrics uplift) and socialise outcomes through executive-ready updates and storytelling.
Maintain currency on AI advancements (e.g., LLMs, retrieval-augmented generation, agents, evaluation frameworks) and work with engineering to apply them pragmatically to solve real developer experience and productivity challenges.
About you
An experienced leader with strong collaboration, communication, and reporting skills, effectively communicating technical updates to diverse audiences.
A proven Product Owner who has delivered complex digital or engineering-enablement products in large organisations, ideally with AI- or developer-platform exposure.
You are comfortable in technical environments and can engage with engineers on topics such as CI/CD, testing, SDLC, developer experience and platform tooling, even if you don’t write code. You are not afraid to ask questions to seek clarity and cut through ambiguity.
Fair working knowledge of AI concepts and application in engineering (e.g., generative AI, prompt engineering basics, guardrails, evaluation, model selection/trade-offs) and a genuine passion for technology.
Experience working within risk, security, privacy, and compliance frameworks a plus; able to balance innovation with responsible AI and controls adherence. You possess an innate bias to action.
If this sounds like you, apply today! We support flexibility with a hybrid approach—at least half your time each month connecting in office—plus options such as adjusted start/finish times, part-time, and job share.
