Engineer I Position

The City of Columbus, Columbus Water and Power, Division of Water, is accepting applications for a full-time Engineer I position. This position will manage project duties associated with capital improvement projects and review proposed plans and specifications affecting the water distribution system to ensure compliance with the Division of Water practices and standards. This position will act as engineer-in-charge of small construction and/or maintenance projects; reviews plans and designs prepared by staff and consulting engineers for conformance to plans, contract specifications, regulations, and codes, and sound engineering principles. In this role, you will represent the division at meetings with local, state, and federal agencies, regional planning and technical committees, commissioners, citizen groups, engineering groups, and other City departments; prepare preliminary, final plans and specifications for minor projects; review and perform studies or additional research to evaluate engineering solutions. This position will also serve as liaison to and communicate information with affected groups such as City departments, inspectors, contractors, developers, design consultants, utility companies, or other participants pertaining to specific engineering projects; and stay abreast of current engineering principles.

To be considered for this position, candidates must have a valid State of Ohio certificate as a registered Professional Engineer and a valid motor vehicle operator's license. Under general supervision, is responsible for performing entry-level professional engineering work; performs related duties as required. Examples of work include:

  • Acts as engineer-in-charge of small construction and/or maintenance projects;
  • Assigns and evaluates work of professional and technical staff;
  • Checks work accomplished by subordinates for quality and quantity by using pre-established standards and policies;
  • Prepares preliminary and final plans and specifications for minor projects;
  • Reviews and performs studies or additional research to evaluate engineering solutions;
  • Reviews and investigates requests and complaints received from the public; recommends corrective measures;
  • Inspects engineering projects for conformance to plans and specifications;
  • Serves as liaison to and communicates information with affected groups such as City departments, inspectors, contractors, developers, design consultants, utility companies, or other participants pertaining to specific engineering projects;
  • Assists in the planning and preparation of proposals and specifications for major engineering projects;
  • Stays abreast of current engineering principles;
  • Operates a computer and mapping software to draw and review maps and plans;
  • May do on-site investigations prior to a project;
  • May represent the division at meetings with local, state, and federal agencies, regional planning and technical committees, commissioners, citizen groups, engineering groups, and other City departments;
  • May direct or personally engage in field surveys; makes plan-in-hand inspections of ongoing projects.

Minimum qualifications include:

  • Possession of a valid State of Ohio certificate as a registered Professional Engineer.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license.
