Intern II/III- CIP/Engineering Services

We are looking for a current student to join our Engineering Services Department as our next Intern! Daily work includes assisting with inspections on City Roadway, Utility, and Drainageway projects, as well as Stormwater inspections. You will also be supporting the Engineering staff with surveys, in house design projects, construction management, project management, and right-of-way permitting. We imagine you will need part time hours while you are working on your coursework. You can work full time hours if you want to- like when you are on school breaks and have more availability. Pay Range: $18.22/hr-$30.45/hr DOE

Essential Functions

Provides staff support related to projects within their work area. Completes assigned research, filing, typing or other projects in a timely manner and with required documentation. Provides back-up support for lunch breaks, vacations and illnesses within the department. Answers phone and routes incoming calls to appropriate person. Responds to customer inquiries relating to their assigned area. Gathers data and related information for projects. Performs data analysis and reporting on assigned projects. Enters data into database and produces reports in various formats for review. Operates office equipment such as copy machines, calculators and computer software to produce end reports and copies. Distributes documents to appropriate sources. Sorts and delivers mail to individual employees. May be required to operate other office equipment such as binders, folding machines or color copiers. Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education/Experience: Intern II: High school diploma or GED plus six months' experience in specific department or progress toward completion of a bachelor's degree in a related field. Intern III: Bachelor's degree plus one year of experience in specific department or progress toward completion of a master's degree in a related field. Licensing/Certification Requirements: May need the ability to travel to various locations in a timely manner as the job requires. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of the policies, procedures and goals of the city of Thornton and the department. Knowledge and experience in the use of office equipment. Knowledge of data processing procedures. Knowledge of the principles and practices of conducting research. Skill in the use of standard office software. Skill in the use of Windows, Word and Excel programs. Skill in the use of the internet and online research. Ability to understand and interpret various forms of information. Ability to use conduct calculations and data manipulation for report purposes. Ability to draft documents. Ability to read, interpret and clearly explain policies to a variety of constituents. Ability to exercise independent judgment and discretion. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, elected officials, boards and commissions, other jurisdictions and members of the general public. Ability to listen well and communicate effectively orally and in writing with various audiences. Physical and Mental Requirements: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, kneel, squat, stoop, climb, crawl, repeatedly twist the upper body, talk, hear, see, demonstrate manual dexterity and perform light lifting. The employee is required to sit and perform duties requiring the use of repetitive motions for prolonged periods and to exercise visual concentration for extended periods. The employee must demonstrate the ability to remain calm during routine and stressful conditions.

Testing Procedures

Examinations may include but are not limited to application screening beyond minimum qualifications; written, oral, practical exercise or any combination thereof or other job related assessment deemed appropriate by Human Resources. As a condition of employment, the city of Thornton conducts background investigations for all positions which may also include a review of credit report and/or driving record. A drug screen, physical, and/or psychological examination administered by a city-designated provider will be required for pre-determined positions.
