Description of Job: About the Position: While working alongside licensed Land Surveyors and Engineering Physical Science Tech II/III, you will get mentoring and training on the job duties below. Position provides support as a field and office survey crew member, providing aid to all ROW staff, by setting up and operating survey-measuring equipment, conducting field investigations for locating land and property corner evidence, and performing topographic surveying in Terrain Modeling Survey System (TMOSS) format. This position also provides office support in processing data collected in the field and assists in preparing maps, exhibits, plans and plats, and other documents based on field information.
Your duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Field Surveying
- Operates survey instruments, including global positioning system (GPS) equipment, conventional total stations and levels, data collectors, and digital levels.
- Works with survey datums and projections and utilizes that information in the field to obtain survey data tied to a control network.
- Collects field data for the preparation of topographical maps of highway lands and properties.
- Understands and conducts field surveys following the CDOT Survey Manual and ROW Manual.
- Assists with weekly schedules and status reports, reports to supervisor.
- Utilizes equipment to verify exiting control and establish project control to CDOT Survey standards.
- Utilizes correct procedures for data collection and safety standards.
- With help from a supervisor, determines the most appropriate equipment (GPS or conventional) to use in the field given topographic and environmental conditions.
- With help from a supervisor, determines the most appropriate operations based on the specific survey needs for assigned projects.
- Office Surveying and Mapping
- Prepare topographic surveys for engineering staff.
- Use Trimble field data collectors and Trimble Business Center (TBC) to analyze collected field data for accuracy and export raw data.
- Use Bentley Openroads software to reduce raw field data and prepare drawings depicting existing conditions of sites with contours and electronic surface models.
- Prepare parts of, or entire ROW Plansets in accordance with the CDOT Survey and ROW Manual using Bentley Openroads software.
- Create parcel base maps, Project and Land Survey Control Diagrams, Ownership maps, Monument sheets and records, exhibits, and other documents as directed and to the specifications of the PLS in responsible charge.
- Calculate search data points for boundary location. Calculate parcels of land that will be encumbered by an easement or will need to be acquired in fee.
- Proofread and prepare legal descriptions for these parcels. Using CAD, plot legal descriptions from deeds to check the accuracy of descriptions.
- Assist with management and oversight of consultant ROW Plans or LPA projects.
- Equipment Responsibilities
- Check survey instruments on National Geodetic Survey (NGS) Calibration Baseline course (A course of monuments with known high-precision distances between them).
- Keeps equipment software upgrades current and assures equipment is kept clean and in good working order.
- Understands and utilizes various data transmission formats from Data Collector to Total Station, Radio and GPS Receivers.
- Keeps survey vehicles clean, organized, and stocked with supplies.
- Customer Service
- Provide ROW plans and information to CDOT employees from the Region 2 ROW database, OTIS and Projectwise archive database.
- Must update Projectwise archive database as needed.
- Provide ROW information to private land surveyors and consultants.
- Other Duties as Assigned
- Assists in research of historic CDOT records and ROW Plans.
- Assists with research in County Clerk and Recorder offices and other sources of maps surveys and other information.
- Requires both online and in-person trips to each county.
- Must abide by all safety regulations, policies, and procedures and wear all required personal protective equipment (hard hat, vest, and hard-toed boots, and other appropriate attire for given field conditions and terrain).
- Will attend and complete all required safety training.
- Follow State Fleet driving procedures.
Work Environment:
- Primarily 7:00 am – 3:30 pm work hours, Monday-Friday
- Travel required during work hours throughout CDOT's Region 2
- Occasional night work during normal work week.
- Approximately 55% spent in the field, 45% spent in the office
- Anticipated 10% overnight travel throughout Region 2, or other cities, for work or training.
- Required to perform survey fieldwork over variable terrain, in all weather conditions, and to work in proximity to heavy traffic.
- Required to operate CDOT vehicles
- Requires a current Colorado driver's license.
- Must be able to lift 50 lbs and up to 100 lbs.
Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights
Minimum Qualifications Education/Licensure/Certification/Experience:
- High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED)
- Four (4) years of experience in any combination of the following:
- Working with professional surveyors conducting field survey operations, including operation survey equipment, data collectors, and scientific calculators.
- Working with professional surveyors performing office drafting operations utilizing CAD software.
- Substitution: Additional appropriate education in surveying, engineering, civil engineering technology, construction management or other relevant coursework will substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.
