Job Summary

A para-professional position working in the Technical Services Section. Work involves detailed and specialized tasks, following Library standards and rules to catalog all library materials in a variety of formats. Must be able to work under minimum supervision, and meet goals set by Library Standards.

This position is located at the Fleming Island Library.

Position requires flexible scheduling, including nights and weekends.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Copy catalog material for the collection by locating matching or existing cataloging records, (bibliographic records) for items in hand, editing the records as necessary, and attaching the local holding information to the bibliographic record for a variety of formats.
  • Work with the Online Computer Library Center (OCLC) and Worldshare Inter Library Loan (ILL) software to perform such duties as: verify ILL items, refer ILL requests, reply to ILL requests, maintain custom holdings, answer questions and provide technical support to ILL staff at branch libraries.
  • Assists in the processing of library books and materials, including stamping, covering, preparing and affixing spine labels.
  • Perform minor repairs on library materials, including replacing covers, spine labels, and stickers.
  • Resolves bibliographic errors to ensure holdings and database records meet standards to increase the discoverability of library resources.
  • Maintains authority records and performs needed authority work in the database.
  • Responsible for tracking all orders placed and received, and advising administration of items not received, or received damaged.
  • Receives, signs for, inventories, and unpacks all new items and prepare them for cataloging.
  • Receives donations, searches for potential matches in system, sorts, and prepares donated materials for cataloging.
  • Clean catalog records such as incorrect call numbers, material types, collection types, miscellaneous fields, as well as missing information.
  • Visits branches to perform ongoing inventory to reconcile the physical library collection with catalog records, identify missing materials, and identify cataloging errors.
  • In case of emergency or crisis situation (hurricane, flood, etc.) position is required to respond/perform emergency and recovery duties as assigned by the Director of Facilities Operations and Maintenance and/or County Manager or designee.
  • During an emergency or crisis situation, this position will be required to be present at the Emergency Operation Center (EOC) to provide a maintenance technician capability while we are activated.
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Minimum Requirements

  • Must have previous experience working with the public.
  • Two year Associates Degree or equivalent is required, 4 year degree preferred.
  • Four years prior experience working in a library.
  • Two years prior experience with cataloging or inventory control is preferred.
  • Valid Florida driver's license with clean driving record.
  • A High School Diploma or GED equivalent is required.
  • Any combination of education and experience may be substituted, so long as it provides the desired skills, knowledge and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.

Supplemental Information

Regular attendance is an essential function of this position.

General knowledge of clerical practices and procedures is necessary.

Ability to operate standard equipment used in a library is required.

Ability to work accurately with detailed information and to perform routine record keeping and tabulation tasks is required.

Ability to communicate effectively with other staff and the public is required, as is the ability to follow oral and written instructions.

Must be able to keyboard accurately, and have a good understanding of Microsoft Suite applications, including Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.

Working Environment and Physical Demands

Sedentary work. Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull otherwise move objects, including the human body.

The worker is subject to inside environmental conditions. Tasks may risk exposure to dust, humidity, etc.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
