Behind every police cruiser, fire truck, snowplow and more is a team of skilled fleet mechanics who keep it mission-ready. The City of Topeka relies on a diverse team of technicians who make sure the vehicles powering public safety and essential services stay safe, reliable and on the road. The City's Fleet Services team is seeking a dedicated mechanic who takes pride in precision, problem-solving and public service to join its Light Duty shop. Mechanics here work on a wide variety of small engine items – from generators and waste pumps to sedans, small pickup trucks (up to ¾ ton) and the Police Department's SUV vehicles. This position works Monday – Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Minimum qualifications: High school diploma or equivalent is required; vocational school applicable to the mechanics trade is preferred. Must possess and maintain a valid Kansas driver's license and must be insurable within the standards set by the City of Topeka's insurance carrier. Opening will be filled at one of three levels based on qualifications:
Mechanic I requires One (1) year verifiable, full time automotive, truck or heavy equipment maintenance work. Experience can be substituted with the completion of a vocational school program applicable to the mechanics trade.
Mechanic II requires Three (3) years verifiable full-time journeyman light automotive, light truck maintenance work.
Master Mechanic - Must possess Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Master Technician certificate and Three (3) years verifiable journeyman experience in diagnosis, repair and overhaul of gasoline and diesel internal combustion engines and automotive mechanical, hydraulic and electrical system maintenance.
Entry rate of pay: $21.69 - $25.92 per hour, depending on qualifications
