Assistant City Attorney V
Manages and supervises a major section of the City Attorney's Office, including Legislative Liaison, Transactions & Advisory, Transactions, Zoning, Special Projects, D/FW Airport, Police Liaison, Personal Injury, Civil Rights, Code Compliance, General Litigation, Criminal Law, Employment, Appellate Litigation, or Community Advocacy. Under the general direction of the appropriate Senior Executive Assistant City Attorney (division chief), this position provides direct administrative and supervisory assistance to the City Attorney. The nature, scope, and general responsibilities of the position are identical to those of the Senior Executive City Attorney but on a second in command basis, under the Senior Executive Assistant City Attorney.
The Assistant City Attorney V provides professional legal assistance and support to the City Attorney. Provides supervision and management for activities in various major sections of the City Attorney's Office.
Essential Functions
- Directs, through subordinates, a major section of the City Attorney's Office and supervises legal work activities involving trials, claims, taxation, condemnation, or other type of legal work.
- Reviews personnel actions which include recommendations for hiring, training, performance evaluations and other personnel actions to ensure productivity and quality standards are maintained.
- Recommends immediate action through the City Attorney to avoid city tort claims that could arise from faulty City equipment; interacts directly with clients at a senior one on one level and instruct on intricacies of the law.
- Assigns attorneys to cases or projects, monitors progress, and provides counsel in legal strategies to subordinate attorneys; researches and provides opinions on legal issues.
- Represents the City Attorney in meetings or hearings with judges of municipal, state and federal courts, corporations and organizations, attorneys, citizens, boards and commissions, and other clients.
- Legal adviser to the City Manager, City Council, boards and commissions, city officers, departments and employees on all legal matters pertaining to the City of Dallas; drafts contracts and other legal documents, zoning ordinances, and real estate documents.
- Develops and implements internal management procedures.
- Represents the city in litigation and controversies.
- Approves problem area ordinances before they are adopted by the City Council.
- Performs other legal duties as directed by the City Attorney to resolve legal issues involving the City of Dallas.
- Performs any and all other work as needed or assigned.
Knowledge and Skills
- Thorough knowledge and experience as a practicing attorney with emphasis on trial work in the fields of administrative law, personal injury, civil rights, code enforcement, eminent domain, employment, real estate transactions, and other transactional work.
- City procedures, City departments, and general City liability.
- Ability to give sound legal advice and respond to legal concerns and questions.
- Background experience in public administration and communication skills.
- Ability to work with a diversified group of individuals.
- Establishing and maintaining effectively working relationships.
- Communicating effectively orally and in writing.
Experience
- 10 years in law and legal process.
Licenses and Certifications
- State of Texas Bar Attorney License.
Education
Salary Range
$138,755.10 - $173,443.87 The salary listed on this job posting is the starting salary range; amount offered will depend upon qualifications.
