Job Summary

Serves as Deputy Section Chief (or senior experienced attorney) in a section of the City Attorney's Office, including personal injury, civil rights, code compliance and environmental litigation, general litigation, prosecution, employment, transactions, criminal law and police, zoning, and DFW Airport.

Job Description

The Assistant City Attorney IV is the senior experienced level attorney position that performs legal work involving personal injury, civil rights, code compliance and environmental litigation, general litigation, prosecution, employment, transactions, criminal law and police, zoning, and DFW Airport.

Essential Functions

1. Supervises, supports, oversees, and provides senior level expertise in legal work activities involving trials, claims, taxation, condemnation or other types of legal work; performs legal work involving litigation and appeals; provides counsel and advice to subordinates on difficult and routine matters; prepares difficult briefs and arguments on appeals to higher courts.

2. Prepares and presents cases in municipal, state, and federal court involving violations such as traffic, zoning, and comparable code violations and litigation involving personal injury, civil rights, employment, zoning, eminent domain, environmental, code compliance and other general litigation claims.

3. Serves as the legal adviser to the City Manager, City Council, boards and commissions, city officers, departments and employees on all legal matters pertaining to the City of Dallas; recommends immediate action through the City Attorney to avoid claims that could arise from faulty City equipment; assists attorney of higher rank in preparing cases for trial and performs trial work involving major civil or criminal cases.

4. Prepares and initiates condemnation actions for major projects; prepares difficult and highly complex contracts for major city purchases.

5. Represents the City Attorney in meetings or hearings with judges of municipal, state and federal courts, corporations and organizations, attorneys, citizens, boards and commissions, and other clients.

6. Attends meetings of departmental officials and employees to advise on legal questions and impact of city decisions, policies, proposed actions, and procedures which should be followed; answers questions and provides feedback and guidance to newer attorneys on how to handle cases or a particular situation.

7. Prepares legal opinions, memoranda, and data for the guidance of the departments in the city and represents them in a variety of court proceedings; reviews city requests for open records and prepares appropriate responses.

8. Performs any and all other work as needed or assigned.

Knowledge and Skills

1. Knowledge of the principles of civil and criminal law, city ordinances, state laws, established precedents and sources of legal reference.

2. Knowledge of court procedures and rules of evidence.

3. Knowledge of the principles, methods, materials, practices and reference utilized in legal research.

4. Ability to analyze, appraise, and organize facts, evidence and precedents relevant in assigned cases.

5. Knowledge of correct grammar, spelling, and punctuation.

6. Communicating effectively orally and in writing.

7. Knowledge of customer service and related skills.

8. Ability to use office machines and computer software.

9. Ability to perform under pressure.

10. Ability to prepare routine correspondence and communication.

11. Establishing and maintaining strong and effective relationships.

Experience

5 Years in General civil law, specialized municipal law or comparable legal experience are required.

Licenses and Certifications

Texas Bar License

Education

Juris Doctorate Degree "Law Degree"

Salary Range $114,154.16 - $142,692.70

The salary listed on this job posting is the starting salary range; amount offered will depend upon qualifications.
