Casual Labourer (Winter Operations)

The City of Belleville is thrilled to announce an opportunity for fourteen (14) hard-working and enthusiastic individuals to join our team as Casual Labourers for Winter Operations! In this pivotal role, you'll be on the front lines of keeping our city safe and accessible throughout the winter season. Your responsibilities will include clearing snow from sidewalks, hand shoveling, general maintenance, garbage pickup, repairing items, and cleaning and maintaining City infrastructure. Additionally, you'll contribute to road maintenance and operate various pieces of equipment. This is your chance to play a key role in serving our community during the winter months!

The Recruitment Process for the Casual Labourer (Winter Operations) Positions:

The City of Belleville will be hosting a Winter Operations Casuals Hiring Event at our 31 Wallbridge Crescent location in Belleville, ON. The hiring event will take place September 23rd and 24th, 2025 from 9:00 AM – 12:00 Noon and 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM.

  1. What to bring with you: Please come prepared with an up-to-date resume, valid (minimum G class) Drivers' License, and any relevant certifications to the below requirements.
  2. On the Day of the Event: The event will be in person, applicants will be provided with time to discuss the role and responsibilities with the Transportation and Operations Supervisors. Applicants will be required to complete screening questionnaires for us to better understand skills and responsibilities.
  3. Next Steps After the Event: Applicants who successfully pass the screeners will be contacted via email and phone for next steps including required satisfactory reference checks, Criminal Records Checks, and Drivers Abstracts (uncertified).

Positions: Fourteen (14) Hours: 40 hours per week; varied shifts including nights

Term of Employment: Up to 200 calendar days in a 12-month period, per the CUPE Local 907 agreement. Work Location: 31 Wallbridge Crescent, Belleville and various locations throughout the City.

Salary: $24.42 per hour, plus $1.85 shift premium where applicable

Union: CUPE

The Transportation and Operations Casual Labourer (Winter Operations) position is part of the team dedicated to excellent operational and customer service experience. The position will assist permanent staff with duties as assigned in the Operations and Parks Divisions, which support winter operations and maintenance requirements throughout the City of Belleville.

Key Accountabilities/Responsibilities:

  • Assist permanent staff with daily maintenance tasks, including but not limited to snow clearing, shoveling, washing, cleaning, trimming, litter, and garbage collection.
  • Operate and maintain a variety of equipment, including sidewalk machines, snow blowers, and power brooms.
  • Perform general labour and work activities as assigned, including lifting, pulling, raking, and shoveling
  • Actively encourage and participate in a team environment.
  • Assist with set up, servicing and take down of various community events.
  • Report vandalism, maintenance and/or public concerns, mechanical difficulties, and equipment/property damage.
  • Complete daily logs and time sheets as required
  • Comply with all applicable regulations/requirements.

Education and Experience:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Valid Class G Licence with a satisfactory driver's abstract (uncertified)
  • One (1) year of experience performing work in parks, construction, landscaping, or farming environment.

Asset Qualifications:

  • Ontario Class D License with a "Z" endorsement
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act
  • Knowledge of the Highway Traffic Act Regulations relative to signage and pavement markings
  • Must have good communication skills and a positive attitude and the ability to deal effectively with the public.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Relevant experience operating a variety of tools and equipment.
  • Experience with customer service, including interacting with the public for help and inquiries.
