Sr. Software Engineer (Communications & Login)
Our healthcare system is the leading cause of personal bankruptcy in the U.S. Every year, over 50 million Americans suffer adverse financial consequences as a result of seeking care, from lower credit scores to garnished wages. The challenge is only getting worse, as high deductible health plans are the fastest growing plan design in the U.S.
Cedar's mission is to leverage data science, smart product design and personalization to make healthcare more affordable and accessible. Today, healthcare providers still engage with its consumers in a "one-size-fits-all" approach; and Cedar is excited to leverage consumer best practices to deliver a superior experience.
The Role:
Cedar is on a mission to fix the broken patient financial experience in healthcare. As a Senior Software Engineer on our Communications & Login squad, you'll help solve one of our most foundational challenges: how we engage patients meaningfully, personally, and at scale.
This team owns the first impression patients have with Cedar—everything from login flows to the email and text messages that guide them through their healthcare bills. It's a deceptively complex problem. What we send, when we send it, how it's personalized, and how patients log in to act on it can be the difference between confusion and clarity. Done well, great communication doesn't just improve payment outcomes—it helps patients feel informed, in control, and supported during a stressful part of the healthcare journey.
This is a role for someone who wants to ship meaningful product, build robust systems, and help level-up a growing team. You'll work across the stack, bring clarity to ambiguous problems, and scale personalized patient communication across millions of users.
Why This Role Matters:
This team sits at the top of the funnel for Cedar's entire product experience. Your work directly influences patient engagement, financial outcomes, and ultimately the success of our provider clients.
You'll work on:
- Revamping our comms content system to be understandable and scalable across teams
- Building personalization infrastructure to tailor messages to patient behavior and context
- Improving login flows and reducing friction at the most critical moment of patient interaction
- Enabling product teams to own and experiment with their own communication touchpoints
- Laying the groundwork for AI-powered messaging and intelligent patient outreach
What You'll Do:
- Own and deliver major features and platform improvements from concept to production
- Partner with product, design, and data to build scalable, patient-first communication systems
- Contribute to architecture decisions and technical direction for a growing squad
- Help revamp and scale our communications infrastructure for clarity, performance, and ownership
- Collaborate on personalization efforts—building data-driven, scalable systems that go beyond "tokenized" emails
You Will Also:
- Provide hands-on technical mentorship to engineers across experience levels
- Bring clarity to ambiguous problems and translate them into actionable technical plans
- Champion best practices around system design, testing, code review, and team collaboration
- Bring a strong sense of ownership to team deliverables and outcomes
Who You Are:
- 6+ years of professional software development experience, ideally in a full-stack role
- Strong communicator who collaborates well with cross-functional teams and non-technical stakeholders
- Skilled in mentoring peers and helping others grow through pairing, feedback, and guidance
- Experienced in designing systems with real-world scale, complexity, and ambiguity
- Comfortable with tradeoffs and pragmatic about architecture decisions
- Passionate about improving the healthcare experience through thoughtful, human-centered software
Bonus Points For:
- Experience with personalized or segmented messaging systems
- Background working with communications platforms (e.g. SMS/email delivery, templating engines, experimentation frameworks)
- Familiarity with AI, LLMs, or machine learning models for personalization or messaging
- Comfort with Python/Django & React
Compensation Range and Benefits:
- Salary/Hourly Rate Range*: $195,500 - $247,250
- This role is equity eligible
- This role offers a competitive benefits and wellness package
