Reporter/Editor, Assigned To Digital (English Services)

We are looking for experienced and dynamic writers who excel at both breaking news and original journalism. You love the craft of writing, and can apply your skills to serve a wide variety of audience needs – be it iterative one-line updates or working through stories that have sensitive editorial or legal considerations. You consume all forms of news and you're excited about the possibilities that digital offers, which includes an integrated text, video and audio experience. You're connected to GTA communities and you want to make sure the stories of the people in those communities are told.

You are a keen observer, focused on reaching new and younger audiences and people in underserved communities through your story pitches, the people you choose to interview, and the techniques you use to present stories. You'll operate independently under the direction of a senior producer. While you're a self-starter, you're joining a team where collaboration and communication are essential, both within your local team and with colleagues across CBC. You're technically adept and if you are not familiar with all of the CBC's tools, you're willing to learn. You understand the importance of video storytelling on all of CBC Toronto's digital platforms, including live streaming and live story pages.

We are hiring for the following digital writer positions:

  • 1 full-time permanent employee, assigned to Wednesday-Sunday early morning shift (0500 start Wed-Fri, 0600 start Sat-Sun)
  • 1 7-month full-time temporary role
  • 2 part-time permanent employees, assigned to weekends
  • Candidates selected to proceed to the interview process will be asked which positions they're interested in.

Key tasks:

  • Write breaking news and in-depth stories for daily deadlines.
  • Pitch original story ideas, chase and interview guests.
  • Package stories incorporating innovative use of video, graphics, links and photos.
  • Write stories based on press releases, interviews gathered for broadcast or aired during live-streamed events, and filling gaps as needed.
  • Write and test headlines that draw people in both on desktop and mobile devices.
  • Curate the online news lineup.
  • Write, manage and deploy mobile push notifications.
  • Contribute to, write for and curate live page events.
  • Take photos, when required.
  • Edit and publish video to digital platforms.
  • Edit stories written by team members when needed.
  • Write and post stories for social media accounts, when needed.

What you bring to the role:

  • As proven in your attached portfolio or website: Ability to generate, pitch and pursue strong, original stories.
  • Track record of connecting with local communities.
  • Demonstrated professional experience using various news platforms, including digital, social.
  • Experience editing visual elements, including photography and video; audio; text; digital interactives and social.
  • Advanced knowledge of web, mobile and social media tools and industry trends.
  • Ability to work in high-pressure environments and under public scrutiny.
  • Ability to work independently, with superior problem-solving skills and objectivity.
  • Ability to forge positive team relationships where you value collaboration, transparency, respect and inclusiveness.
  • Demonstrated connection to the diversity of the GTA.
  • Three years of previous related experience.
  • A university degree or college diploma in journalism or related fields is preferred.
  • Ability to work a variety of shifts, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, stat holidays and overtime.

Operational requirements:

  • You will be working with an online content management system to edit, manage and publish content (Polopoly, CMS).
  • You are adept using (or learning) audio and video editing software for listening back to interviews and basic editing (Dalet, Adobe Audition, Media Central).
  • This position requires you to work in the CBC News Toronto office full-time.

Please include additional documentation or a link to your online demo, website or blog in your cover letter.

Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing.

We thank all applicants for their interest, but only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted. As part of our recruitment process, candidates who advance to the next step will be asked to complete a background check. This includes: A mandatory Criminal record check. Other background checks may be conducted based on the operational requirements of the position.
