This is a rare opportunity to step into a leadership role in a thriving local multiplatform newsroom full of smart journalists. The team at CBC Toronto produces daily local news coverage for people who live and work in the Greater Toronto Area. As part of this role, you will oversee the conception, assignment, and distribution of breaking, investigative, explanatory, and current affairs journalism in all formats–video, audio, and text–on digital and broadcast platforms.

As the Executive Producer of News for CBC Toronto, you are the go-to person for journalistic decisions for all programs and platforms. You will ensure CBC Toronto sets the GTA's news agenda. You will guide programming decisions around breaking news events. You have an in-depth understanding of CBC's Journalistic Standards and Practices and are responsible for ensuring your team functions within these guidelines. You can make quick decisions when required but you're also a creative thinker with a track record of finding solutions to complex problems.

You provide direction on all news output, leading daily storytelling and driving major content projects that anticipate the needs of the audience. Your understanding of the region's cultural communities informs your journalistic decision making. You are a keen observer, focused on reaching new and younger audiences and people in underserved communities.

You thrive on change and are able to motivate people and get them excited to work in a rapidly evolving news environment. You have your finger on the pulse of changing audience consumption trends and want to meet audiences where they are to serve their needs. You are excited by experimentation. You are invested in the development of new formats and programming that's relevant to the needs of people in the GTA.

You lead by example and are committed to an inclusive and respectful workplace culture. You can make quick decisions when required but you're an open-minded leader who encourages healthy debate and creative thinking. You will play a key leadership role in hiring new members of the team and ensuring continuous development opportunities within a rapidly changing and competitive media environment.

Key Tasks:

  • Provides editorial direction for all news stories.
  • Works collaboratively with teams across the CBC to ensure stories are shared with the widest possible audience.
  • Ensures that meaningful, specific feedback is provided to members of the news team.
  • Leads the planning of special projects and coverage plans.
  • Allocates resources against strategic outcomes.
  • Plans, leads, and assigns breaking news coverage on all platforms, including special programming as needed.
  • Oversees expansion of live programming on emerging platforms such as FAST and Live Pages.
  • Coordinates legal support and provides editorial judgment as needed.
  • Responds to complaints from the audience.
  • Performs all or part of the function or duties of an equivalent or lower classification.

Additional Requirements:

  • University degree or equivalent.
  • Ten (10) years' experience which must include work in both broadcast and digital.
  • Ability to work flexible hours as required, including weekends on call.
  • This position requires you to work in the CBC Toronto office full-time.

Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing.
