As a Design Engineer working in Athens, GA for the Mini Hydraulic Excavator (MHE) design team, you will become intimately familiar with the design of the MHE product, provide support to the MHE assembly line and welded fabrication line, assist other MHE engineers with projects of various complexities, and occasionally complete current-product design/drawing projects. You will play a very important role in the implementation of new products and improvements to current product.

Primary Job Duties:

  • Daily monitoring of Athens MHE assembly line and welded fabrication line. Must be constantly available to provide "front line" assistance to help resolve any product problem on the assembly line.
  • Participating in the adoption of new technologies and processes (automation, robotics, computer aided manufacturing software, etc.) to achieve greater efficiency, cost reduction and quality improvement. Be always on the lookout for ways to improve the product and manufacturing of the product.
  • Collaborating with all functional areas, (marketing, purchasing, manufacturing, quality) to provide a design solution that meets the requirements of the customer and dealer network.
  • Interact with multiple design controls to support continuous improvement of their respective portions of the overall machine.
  • When other workload allows, create new designs or change existing designs with the purpose of resolving product issues being experienced by customers and/or causing difficulty for manufacturing.

What You Will Have:

  • Requires a degree from an accredited Engineering curriculum.
  • Technical Excellence: Knowledge of a given technology and various application methods; ability to develop and provide solutions to significant technical challenges. Provides effective technical solutions to routine functional challenges via sound technical competence, effectively examining implications of events and issues. Interrogates production drawings and CAD models using CREO and Teamcenter (or equivalent).
  • Design for Manufacturability (DFM): Knowledge of design for manufacturability guidelines, methodologies, and use cases; ability to use this knowledge to optimize product designs and manufacturing operations. Implements DFM methodologies to standardize product designs, simplify operations, and reduce costs for certain types of manufacturing processes.
  • Effective Communications: Understanding of effective communication concepts, tools and techniques; ability to effectively transmit, receive, and accurately interpret ideas, information, and needs through the application of appropriate communication behaviors. Listens to feedback without defensiveness and uses it for own communication effectiveness. Makes oral presentations and writes reports needed for own work.
  • Analytical Thinking: Knowledge of techniques and tools that promote effective analysis; ability to determine the root cause of technical problems and create alternative solutions that resolve these problems.

Top Candidates Will Have:

  • Experience in welded structures design, hydraulics design, electrical harness design, electronics/systems engineering, and/or manufacturing engineering
  • Concurrent Product and Process Development experience from the design role perspective
  • Mechanical design and detailing experience using Creo
  • Experience releasing drawing packages using Teamcenter and Engineering Data System (EDS)

  • Office Model: This position requires the employee to work a 5-day-a-week schedule in the office.

Summary Pay Range: $95,640.00 - $143,520.00 Compensation and benefits offered may vary depending on multiple individualized factors, job level, market location, job-related knowledge, skills, individual performance and experience. Please note that salary is only one component of total compensation at Caterpillar.
