As a Control Systems Engineer within Caterpillar's Backhoe Loader (BHL) Product Group, part of Building Construction Products, you will play a key role in designing, integrating and validating machine control systems and displays across the BHL product line. Working end-to-end on complex, safety-critical systems, you will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to deliver robust, high-performance solutions that enhance machine usability, productivity and customer value.

Salary: £41,500 - £51,900 depending on skills demonstrated

Contract: Full time & permanent

Location: Desford, Leicestershire – domestic relocation will be considered

What you will do:

As a Control Systems Engineer, you are accountable for, but not limited to:

  • Designing and integrating electrical, mechanical and software control systems for BHL machines
  • Defining and documenting machine control requirements and translating them into effective software solutions
  • Developing, validating and testing control systems and user interfaces directly on machines
  • Applying system integration principles across engine, hydraulics, transmission and powertrain
  • Supporting manufacturing, dealers and customers through validation, troubleshooting and issue resolution
  • Operating machines to assess control performance, usability and overall customer experience

What You Can Demonstrate:

Level: Extensive Experience

  • Requirements Analysis: Ability to define and document functional and non-functional control requirements and translate them into clear inputs for software and system integration, ensuring control behaviour is correctly implemented across electrical, mechanical and software systems.
  • Embedded Systems: Understanding of embedded control systems used in heavy machinery, including how software, electronics and hardware interact to control machine functions and displays.

Level: Working Knowledge

  • Problem Solving: Ability to apply structured problem-solving approaches to diagnose control system, software or machine performance issues, evaluate options and implement effective solutions across development and production.
  • Communicating Complex Concepts: Ability to clearly explain technical control system behaviour, requirements and trade-offs to cross-functional teams, dealers and customers, adapting communication style to suit the audience.

What You May Have:

  • Skill in designing attachments or heavy-equipment components with an understanding of real operating conditions
  • Capability to support production launch, supplier development and resolution of manufacturing or quality issues
  • Sound judgement when balancing cost, validation, timing and risk trade-offs to inform product and sourcing decisions
