As one of the oldest forms of applied science and engineering, Carnegie Mellon University's Department of Metallurgical Engineering was founded in 1906 and named after its emphasis on the study of metals. Since then, our field has broadened to include all classes of materials from ceramics and polymers to semiconductors and biological materials. Whereas early eras of civilization were widely identified by human's ability to work with new material (Stone Age, Bronze Age), today our abilities and projects span a variety of materials and combine everything from physics and chemistry to civil and electrical engineering.

The Materials Science and Engineering Department at Carnegie Mellon is seeking a research associate to join Newell Washburn group in the Materials Science and Engineering Department in the College of Engineering. The position will focus on experiments and modeling related to liquid formulations for organic coatings.

Core Responsibilities:

• Conduct experiments on liquid formulations for organic coatings
• Collect, analyze, and interpret experimental data
• Apply materials handling and characterization techniques
• Utilize machine learning, molecular modeling, and computer vision tools
• Collaborate with researchers in automated experimentation and chemistry
• Document and present research results in group meetings and reports
• Performs related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

• BS degree in Materials Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related field
• Research lab experience with materials handling and characterization
• Data collection and analysis skills with strong attention to detail
• Experience with machine learning, molecular modeling, or computer vision
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and reasoning skills
• Effective communication skills and ability to work collaboratively in a research team
• A combination of education and relevant experience from which comparable knowledge is demonstrated may be considered.
