Senior Process Control Engineer – Berkeley, CA

PURPOSE

Responsible to ensure reliable and efficient operation of all PCS systems across Berkeley facilities including new B88 QC building, B80 Warehouse, Central Utilities, ESE (Emeryville QC Labs) and Facilities Engineering. Functions as primary Plant PCS Engineer.

YOUR TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Production / Laboratory Support:

  • Optimizes Process Control Systems related production processes and logistics with regard to safety, environment, cost, quality, and regulatory requirements;
  • Provides technical input for the definition of concepts for new plants, improvement of existing equipment and/or the identification of alternative equipment or installations;
  • Provides the necessary technical expertise for troubleshooting and resolving problems with Production Unit processes and equipment;

Maintenance / Reliability:

  • Ensures production equipment, facilities, utilities, and control systems reliable performance through preventive or predictive measures as well as small modifications and repairs;
  • Establishes, initiates, and analyzes preventative maintenance (PM) and calibration programs. Collects, analyzes, and reports equipment downtime information to reliability group and ensure resolution of critical equipment items;
  • Coordinates maintenance activities and shutdown requirements for equipment and facilities;

Project Support, Execution and Management:

  • Project management and detailed engineering of smaller projects (AFE, <$250,000) including planning, detailed design, procurement, construction management, quality, budget, and optimization;
  • Provides plant and production input and project engineering support for large projects, (AFE, >$250,000);
  • Performs installation and operational commissioning and qualification testing of equipment and systems. Understands and ensures all relevant procedures for operation, commissioning, and qualification are followed and acts as technical resource on multi-disciplinary projects and activities;

cGMP Compliance:

  • Provides requested support for audits conducted by internal and external agencies;
  • Resolves Quality action items, writes Engineering Assessments as Subject Matter Expert (SME). Performs Risk Assessments and resolution of risk analysis;
  • Ensures the cGMP compliance for Process Unit Control Systems per Bayer directives, CFR Part 11 and other regulatory agency requirements.

WHO YOU ARE

Bayer seeks an incumbent who possesses the following:

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Requires a Bachelor of Engineering Degree from an accredited college or university in Chemical, Electrical, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related field.
  • Experience in industrial automation, including implementation, troubleshooting, and system support or an equivalent combination of education and experience;
  • Experience with FAT, SAT, Commissioning and Qualification, including hands on experience starting-up and running new equipment, resolving technical equipment issues, developing turn-over packages, etc.;
  • Understanding of relevant SOPs, Guidelines, and Regulatory requirements;
  • Experience with regulatory and cGMP requirements for pharmaceutical manufacturing;
  • Knowledge and hands-on experience with pharmaceutical manufacturing processes, including equipment, utilities, and facilities, cGMP compliance, high purity water systems, clean room HVAC systems, cold room refrigeration systems, process instrumentation and control systems, etc.;
  • Experience with Process Control Systems, including DCS / PLC programming, VFDs, REES, BAS, SCADA, Profibus, MES (Manufacturing Execution Systems), instrumentation and low voltage (up to 480 V) electrical systems;
  • Ability to troubleshoot complex equipment / systems and supporting utility services;
  • Requires flexibility to support business requirement of rotational on- call support and / or weekend coverage;
  • Good technical / business communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Demonstrates high level of urgency and is able quickly adapt to changing priorities;
  • Working knowledge or desire to learn Process Control Systems Computers Networking and communication cabling infrastructure;
  • Basic understanding and familiarity with networking architecture drawings, electrical wiring diagrams, and P&IDs
  • Able to implement and maintain Cisco infrastructure and security including configuration and troubleshooting of Cisco routers, switches and firewalls, support MS Windows Servers, Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, VMware, Acronis, What's up Gold, Trend Micro, and Database Administration for SQL Server;
  • Monitors PCS Network performance for proactive intervention and optimization. Supports Network Equipment Reliability program including critical spare parts management and Life Cycle Documentation;
  • Ensure PCS Network compliance with local procedures and global directives. Desire to learn a broad range of skills; from how technical systems work, networking equipment troubleshooting and asset life cycle management;
  • Desire to gain a deep knowledge of pharmaceutical and biotech production processes as well as excellent understanding of cGMP requirements, rules, and regulations.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • BS 6+ years (YOE preferred), MS 0-4+ years (YOE preferred), PhD 0-2 years (YOE preferred) experience in industrial automation, including implementation, troubleshooting, and system support or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Employees can expect to be paid a salary between $99,059.00 to $148,588.00. Additional compensation may include a bonus or commission (if relevant). Additional benefits include health care, vision, dental, retirement, PTO, sick leave, etc. This salary range is merely an estimate and may vary based on an applicant's location, market data/ranges, an applicant's skills and prior relevant experience, certain degrees and certifications, and other relevant factors.
