Reporting directly to the Manufacturing Engineering Manager, the Manufacturing Engineering Specialist is responsible for the estimating and execution of a broad range of manufacturing projects from commercial and custom manufactured parts to sophisticated nuclear equipment.
Your day to day:
- This is an intermediate level position (3+ years' experience). The position would have responsibility to independently plan and execute jobs of significant scope and complexity. This position would also support more senior ME's by independently completing significant scope of very large, complex projects.
- This position is responsible for creating detailed cost estimates for supply/manufacturing jobs of large scope and complexity. This includes planning the manufacturing process and make/buy strategies, obtaining vendor pricing for purchased items, and estimating all in-house labour activities. Estimating includes schedule creation. This position is responsible for planning work and writing work packages to communicate to the Manufacturing Shop to get hands on work done. This position has accountability for the results of hands-on work without having authority over those doing the work. This can be challenging to manage and requires good communication skills to be successful as they will be the first point of contact to resolve any problems in assembly or testing in the shop.
- This role also interfaces with design engineering both to provide feedback and inputs to design and also to execute the manufacturing of the designs that are produced by design engineering. Manufacturing inputs can be at odds to the design outcomes since manufacturing will push for low cost while engineering is often pushing to maximize performance which can drive cost and complexity. This position may design manufacturing tools and fixtures not requiring engineering calculations
- This position is also required to communicate with customers and these interfaces can involve uncomfortable or challenging situations. They will communicate status including bad news and reasons for schedule misses or quality/cost problems.
- Communications to Project Management will involve status reports and performance reporting including explaining why cost and schedule metrics are missed when there are problems on jobs. They will also communicate mitigation plans and strategies to PM's and the broader team.
- Communication with Quality Assurance will involve collaborative planning of manufacturing and test activities. These will also negotiate the application of QA requirements to jobs where QA will be aiming to maximize oversight while Manufacturing will be aiming to minimize oversight and therefore cost.
Accountability 1: Safe Execution of Manufacturing
- EHS awareness and priority
- Manufacturing Planning
- Effective Communication
- This role is responsible for the safe performance of all shop assembly and test activities despite those tasks being performed by others. This role writes detailed manufacturing instructions and must consider and plan for all EHS aspects of the work including chemical management, PPE, lifting, ergonomics, electrical safety, fall protection, Lock-Out Tag-out, etc.
Accountability 2: Quality of Manufactured Projects
- Manufacturing planning
- QA involvement and planning
- Effective Communication
- This role is responsible for the ultimate quality of all manufactured deliverables and must coordinate with Quality Assurance personnel from staff to the shop floor to ensure appropriate oversight and validation while adhering to project budgets and schedules.
Accountability 3: Cost of Manufactured Projects
- Estimating accuracy
- Manufacturing Planning
- Effective Make/Buy decisions
- Effective communication
- This role is accountable for the cost of all manufactured deliverables despite having limited influence on the design and no authority over the personnel performing hands on work nor supporting functions (QA, Sourcing, etc). The ME may have prepared the project estimate but often the estimate will have been performed by others. This role is the first point of contact for shop floor staff in cases of manufacturing issues, feedback, questions, etc.
Accountability 4: On Time Delivery of Manufactured Projects
- Estimating accuracy
- Manufacturing Planning
- Scheduling and time management
- Effective communication
- This role is accountable for the schedule of all manufactured deliverables which requires detailed and organized planning of work, creation and maintenance of appropriately detailed schedules, and broad communication between numerous groups involved in the manufacturing process. The ME must be able to effectively expedite individuals across the organization when required to ensure schedules are met.
Accountability 5: Manufacturing Input to Design
- Technical knowledge of manufacturing/manufacturability
- Effective communication
- This role is involved in detailed reviews of engineering designs and is responsible for providing manufacturing feedback to the design process. The objective is to influence design to reduce cost and schedule and improve quality of manufactured items. This depends on good communication skills as the ME must be able to influence the designers who may have strong opinions on design elements that could be changed to benefit manufacturing. The ME must also have strong manufacturing process knowledge to be able to provide valuable and credible feedback to designers.
Qualifications:
- University graduate in an Engineering discipline
- Holds or working towards a current PEO license
