Pavement Engineer

A Pavement Engineer specializing in airport projects is responsible for the design, evaluation, and maintenance planning of airside pavements such as runways, taxiways, and aprons. The role ensures that pavement systems meet operational, safety, and regulatory standards.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design & Analysis: Perform structural design and analysis of flexible and rigid pavements using FAA, ICAO, and local authority guidelines.
  • Pavement Evaluation: Conduct pavement condition surveys, non-destructive testing (NDT), and load-bearing capacity assessments (e.g., PCN calculations).
  • Material Selection: Specify appropriate materials for subgrade, base, and surface layers to meet performance and durability requirements.
  • Project Coordination: Collaborate with civil, geotechnical, and airfield lighting teams to ensure integrated airside infrastructure design.
  • Construction Supervision: Monitor pavement construction, testing, and quality control to ensure compliance with design specifications.
  • Documentation & Reporting: Prepare technical reports, design calculations, and maintenance plans including rehabilitation and overlay strategies.

Requirements:

Experience Requirements:

  • Experience in airport airside pavement design and construction (runways, taxiways, aprons).
  • Proficiency in software like FAARFIELD, COMFAA, HEADS, or similar pavement design tools.
  • Familiarity with ICAO Annex 14, FAA Advisory Circulars, and ASTM/AASHTO standards.

Key Skills:

  • Strong foundation in pavement engineering and materials science
  • Experience with heavy-duty pavement load design (aircraft loads)
  • Analytical thinking and technical reporting
  • Coordination with multidisciplinary airport project teams
