R&D Leads Sustaining Engineer Intern

Our R&D engineers are tasked with designing and developing implant products for the Active Implantable Systems (AIS) group. This includes technologies that monitor, support diagnosis and treat irregular heart rhythms, heart failure, and sudden cardiac arrest. AIS provides devices and therapies for a patient's entire continuum of care, from diagnostic to treatment. This division strives to innovate and create a paradigm shift that can solve unmet clinical needs and change what is possible for patients.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Contribute to the design and development of implantable medical devices that support diagnosis and treatment of cardiac conditions
  • Apply mechanical design principles and CAD tools (e.g., SolidWorks) to develop components
  • Conduct hands-on prototyping and testing to validate design performance and reliability
  • Perform statistical data analysis and apply design of experiments (DOE) to optimize product and process outcomes
  • Use tools such as MATLAB, Minitab, and LabVIEW to support modeling, data acquisition, and system evaluation
  • Integrate biomechanics considerations into device design to enhance patient compatibility and therapeutic effectiveness
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure device functionality, safety, and clinical relevance across the continuum of care
  • Bring creativity and problem-solving to engineering challenges that address unmet clinical needs and advance cardiac care innovation

Required Qualifications:

  • Current rising junior or rising senior (grad dates between Dec 2026 - May 2028), graduating senior (May 2026 grad) continuing on to grad school, or current grad student. Must have at least one semester of school left post-internship to qualify.
  • Working towards a Bachelors or Masters degree in Mechanical, Biomedical, Electrical Engineering or Statistics
  • Must be able to start internship on May 18 or 26, 2026 and work for 12 weeks
  • Must have reliable transportation to/from work
  • Experience with Minitab or MATLAB
  • Experience with CAD tools such as SolidWorks
  • Mechanical design experience in academic or professional settings
  • Experience with statistical data analysis including design of experiments (DOE)

Preferred qualifications:

  • Rising seniors
  • Medical industry experience
  • Experience with LabVIEW in an academic or professional settings
  • Experience working with Biomechanics

Ability to communicate effectively with diverse, cross-functional teams

Passion to learn new technologies and find new solutions
