Overview
Beyond New Horizons, LLC (BNH) has an exciting opportunity for a Power Engineer, supporting TOS II, at Tunnel 9 in White Oak, Maryland. The Power Engineer will be working as a member of an integrated team responsible for operating AEDC's Hypervelocity Tunnel No. 9 (Tunnel 9) in Silver Spring, MD.
Job Summary
Systems Engineers provide engineering functions to support wind-tunnel testing at Tunnel 9. The candidate will take ownership of major electrical systems including underground/overhead distribution, transformers and switchgear, substations, MCCs, plant & building power and lightning protection systems. The candidate selected will coordinate facility and equipment improvement projects, follow project lifecycle (planning, budgeting, schedule, and execution), perform electrical design of tunnel components including single lines, provide assistance troubleshooting problems with tunnel components, and review work for application of sound professional judgment.
Job Duties:
- Originate or check calculations for electrical loads for mechanical and electrical equipment.
- Originate or check electrical drawings including equipment layouts, single lines, and wiring and schematic diagrams.
- Prepares specifications, estimates, and scope of work documents [for both in-house design, outside contractor installation work, and design/build subcontract work].
- Designs electrical equipment interface and installation details.
- Prepares electrical designs and construction drawings using 2-D / 3-D computer aided design (CAD), presentation graphics and electrical models.
- Leads studies (such as fault current, voltage drop, and reliability analysis) that require knowledge of principles and techniques commonly employed in electrical design work.
- Respond when systems malfunction during a test, troubleshooting and directive corrective maintenance activities (or calling in the appropriate systems engineer for additional support), ensuring a timely return to service.
- Perform root cause failure analyses and other equipment performance analyses when systems or processes fail and recommend remedial actions.
- Conduct and write up system safety hazard analyses and write clear work instructions.
- Update and maintain system documentation for systems of responsibility.
- Participates in and fosters a work environment that is based upon openness, trust, communication, teamwork, empowerment, innovation, and satisfaction.
- It is a condition of employment to wear company issued PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) in accordance with supervisory direction and company policy.
- Perform other related duties as required.
Basic Qualifications:
- B.S. degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering from a regionally accredited college or university and a minimum of seven years of progressive and relevant engineering experience.
- Current US Citizenship required
- Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance and the AEDC local area network
Preferred Qualifications
- Demonstrated skill in oral and written communication
- Good knowledge of major industry or regulatory standards (such as the National Electrical Code and IEEE standards) and design criteria pertinent to the electrical engineering discipline.
- Educational and/or work experience in dealing with electrical systems or electrical components of mechanical systems.
- Developmental experience such as practical work experience in design engineering or other relevant types of engineering such as systems startup, field engineering, or plant operations / maintenance in large industrial plants, utilities, process plants or other engineering/construction firms.
- Professional engineering certification.
- Experience writing Scope of Work documents.
