What We’re Looking For?

Your mission will be to give sports fans experiences they can’t wait to share with their friends.

Our Lead Engineers are part of a community of our most senior engineers focusing on the organisation’s most complex, ambitious problems. You will take ownership for technical architecture and operational excellence and lead on some of the most important bodies of technical work in the organisation. You will be a core contributor to the organisation’s ā€œnorth starā€ technical strategy, working with other engineering leaders to drive decisions around programming languages, architecture, products, tools, approaches and processes. Free of line management responsibilities you will provide mentorship and guidance to other engineers, acting as a role model and supporting career progression.

What Will You Do?

  • Own your teams’ architecture, aligning with the vertical’s Principal Engineers on a common technical strategy.
  • Take ownership of a team’s operational excellence, taking a hands on approach to the resolution of the teams’ most complex issues when needed.
  • Write simple code, taking complex paradigms and implementing them in a way that Engineers at all levels can understand and contribute to. Insist on high standards for code quality while not letting perfection be the enemy of good.
  • Influence the strategy of the team(s), helping them understand how to make technical trade-off decisions between short-term business needs and long-term technology needs.
  • Drive engineering engagement best practices (e.g., AI, Operational Excellence, Security, Quality, etc.) and set standards for your vertical.
  • Help others leverage your expertise, by coaching and mentoring in your organisation. Contribute to the professional development of Engineers within the vertical, improving their technical knowledge and engineering practices.
  • Support our software as part of an on-call rotation.

Desired Experience & Qualifications:

Key Skills:

  • Expert level experience building and designing highly scalable, fault tolerant and highly available systems.
  • Experience influencing technical decisions across 1-2 agile engineering teams.
  • Understand a broad range of complex data structures and complex algorithms.
  • Expert level understanding of design patterns and architectural principles.
  • Experienced in making pragmatic trade-off decisions between short term needs and long-term needs.
  • Experienced in many modern programming languages (ideally Java)
  • Demonstrated abilities driving operational excellence and best practices through influence.

Essential:

  • Proven experience writing distributed, highly scalable, and available backend systems & APIs using Java SE and/or Java EE: beans, concurrency, transactions, I/O, servlets, messaging, application monitoring, ORM (Hibernate, JPA);
  • Knowledge of release process best practices for APIs and services within production systems - build tools (e.g. BuildKite, Maven, Gradle), version control (e.g. git) and continuous integration systems (e.g. Jenkins).
  • Experience working with cloud-based infrastructure and technologies, preferably AWS.
  • A fundamental understanding of data structures and algorithms.
  • Hands-on experience with unit testing/mocking frameworks (e.g. junit, mockito).
  • Strong sense of ownership, urgency, and drive.
  • Demonstrated abilities driving operational excellence and software best practices.
  • Experience with testing concepts, test tools, and integrating testing and best practices in the SDLC
  • Desire to learn and develop your skills through a growth mindset
  • Passion for working within a fast-paced environment and can adapt to change

Desirable:

  • Experience with using AI coding assistants and agentic models such as CoPilot, Cursor in a business setting
  • Exposure to Linux operating systems.
  • Experience using non relational databases (e.g. MongoDB, Redis, Couchbase).
  • Familiarity with AWS / Cloud Computing (e.g. S3, SQS, SNS);
  • Experience with analysis & monitoring tools (e.g. DataDog, NewRelic);
  • Contact with messaging technologies (e.g. RabbitMQ, Kafka);
  • Container experience (e.g. Docker);
  • Knowledge of caching systems (e.g. Redis);
  • Understanding of the full development cycle and some experience of Agile development methodologies and supporting tools e.g. JIRA, Confluence.
